If MW2 shader optimization appears stuck, first leave the game at the Main Menu and let Shader Preloading run. This guide covers the 2022 PC version of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare II, not the 2009 game. Activision says leaving the Main Menu stops preloading and can cause performance problems, but its guidance does not give a reliable wait time, stuck-percentage threshold, or guaranteed fix for every PC.
Let Shader Preloading finish at the Main Menu
Shader Preloading is part of MWII’s first-boot process. Keep the game on the Main Menu while it runs; navigating away stops preloading and may cause performance issues. Activision explains this in its Modern Warfare II PC Troubleshooting guidance.
The official guidance does not specify how long preloading should take or when a particular percentage proves that it has stalled. A display such as 2% or 99% by itself does not establish the cause, so avoid treating a percentage as evidence of a GPU fault or a specific system problem.
Try these troubleshooting steps in order
- Keep the game at the Main Menu. Avoid navigating to another screen while shader preloading is in progress.
- If progress does not move, restart the game and launcher. This is a basic troubleshooting attempt, not a remedy Activision specifically guarantees for a shader stall.
- Repair the game files through your launcher.
- Battle.net: Use Scan and Repair for MWII.
- Steam: Use the option to verify the integrity of the game files.
Activision lists these repair routes in its PC troubleshooting instructions.
- Check for interfering applications. Close background apps that could conflict with the game. Activision names NZXT CAM, MSI Afterburner, and Razer Cortex as examples; that does not mean any one of them is necessarily causing your issue. For persistent problems, its guidance also describes clean boot troubleshooting.
- Check whether antivirus software is blocking MWII. Activision recommends adding the entire MWII game folder to your antivirus exception list. Confirm the correct folder path and use your security software’s normal process; do not turn off all protection.
Separate shader stalls from installation or patching failures
If the launcher also cannot download or update game files, address that installation or patching problem separately. Blizzard’s Battle.net installation and patching guidance recommends checking the connection, rebooting, updating drivers and the operating system, and reviewing security software. Those steps concern downloading or updating files; Blizzard does not present them as a fix for MWII shader compilation.

When to contact Activision Support
If PC performance problems remain after troubleshooting, contact Activision Support and have a DxDiag report ready. The MWII known-issues page, updated February 27, 2026, directs players reporting PC performance loss to support with DxDiag information. The page may change over time.
Activision’s troubleshooting page includes dated driver versions, which should not be treated as current recommendations. If you need to update a graphics driver, check the current release from your GPU manufacturer rather than relying on old version numbers in that article.

What not to assume
- A fixed percentage does not, on the available official guidance, identify a particular cause or diagnosis.
- There is no official timeout or universal one-click fix established for every shader-preloading stall.
- Deleting arbitrary cache folders or changing system settings is not an officially supported guaranteed fix in the cited MWII guidance.
