Fortnite’s March 8, 2024 Chapter 5 Season 2 rollout was delayed by an unexpected maintenance issue. Epic said downtime would last “at least 8 additional hours.” A later estimate of approximately five hours referred to when players could pre-download the updated v29.00 build—not a confirmed time for servers to come back online.
Why was Fortnite down?
Fortnite was offline for maintenance as Epic prepared Chapter 5 Season 2. On March 8, 2024, Epic community staff member Flak posted an update on the Epic Developer Community Forums: “Hey everyone, we encountered an unexpected issue during our maintenance and we need to extend downtime at least 8 additional hours.” Read Epic’s extended-downtime notice.

Epic’s announcement did not identify the technical cause. It established that maintenance had hit an unexpected issue, but it did not provide a more specific diagnosis.
What did the five-hour estimate mean?
The approximately five-hour estimate was about pre-downloading an updated version of v29.00. A contemporaneous post preserved Fortnite Status’s wording: “Players will be able to pre-download an updated version of v29.00 in approximately 5 hours.” See the contemporaneous post.

Pre-downloading an update and being able to play online are separate milestones. The estimate did not confirm that matchmaking or Fortnite’s servers would be available five hours later. GameSpot’s report at the time also distinguished the download estimate from a guaranteed return to play. Read GameSpot’s March 8 coverage.
When would Chapter 5 Season 2 be playable?
Epic’s extended-downtime notice did not give a definitive server reopening time. The five-hour pre-download estimate cannot be used as a playable-server ETA, and the cited announcement does not establish exactly when access returned.

- An Epic Games account is required to redeem an Epic Games Store Card code
- If playing on a console platform (PlayStation Network, Xbox Live, Nintendo Switch or Mobile) you need to link your Epic Games account to that gaming platform (one time) to redeem your gift card code
- The 16 digit code on the back of the card WILL NOT work if redeemed directly through your gaming platform (PlayStation Network, Xbox Live, Nintendo Switch, Mobile, etc.)
- Note: Nintendo devices do not support Fortnite Shared Wallet, so V-Bucks purchased using your account balance will not show up on your Nintendo device. However, if you purchase items in the web Item Shop — or another platform where you play Fortnite — those items will be available in your Locker across all platforms.

In the forum thread, Flak also directed players asking for an ETA to keep an eye on Fortnite Status. These official channels are the appropriate places to check during an outage; a download estimate alone does not establish that the live service is ready.
