To fish in RimWorld: Odyssey, choose fish-bearing shallow, non-toxic water, designate a fishing zone, and assign a colonist to the Fish work type. Complete Fishing research first unless your colony began with a Tribe start, which starts with the research complete. Fishing draws on a shared local fish population, so treat it as one food source—not an inexhaustible supply—and keep backup food available.
Does fishing require Odyssey?
Yes. Fishing is a feature of the Odyssey expansion, not the base game. Ludeon Studios introduced it as a way to supply food from rivers, oceans, and openings in frozen lakes, including when crops are frozen or wildlife is scarce. The RimWorld Wiki’s Odyssey overview dates the expansion’s release to July 11, 2025.

The mechanic is colony work, not a rod-and-bait simulation: designate where pawns fish, then manage their work priorities and the water’s stock. Ludeon Studios’ fishing preview also describes fish as trade goods and ingredients for higher-quality meals.
How do you make a fishing zone?
- Find a suitable body of water. It must contain fish, and the designated tiles must be shallow, non-toxic water. Larger bodies are generally a better choice, according to the RimWorld Wiki’s Fishing page.
- Unlock Fishing if needed. Complete the Fishing research project to make zones available. New Tribe starts begin with Fishing researched.
- Designate reachable tiles. Place the fishing zone over suitable water and ensure a pawn can access the work area.
- Assign capable workers. Set Fish work priority for colonists with time to spare. Their Animals skill affects Fishing Speed and Fishing Yield.
- Monitor the stock. Reduce or pause fishing when the local population is under pressure, and rotate work or use another source of food.
The Fishing wiki page is marked as a stub, so exact timings and catch probabilities should be treated as version-sensitive rather than fixed guarantees.

Which water should you fish?
Different kinds of water can host different fish. In its preview, Ludeon gives these examples:
| Water type | Developer examples |
|---|---|
| Ocean | Marlin and tuna |
| Lake | Salmon and bass |
| Tropical river | Piranhas |
These are examples, not a complete catch list. The wiki describes additional biome-specific availability and catch categories, but its Fishing page is incomplete. Check the map and in-game information rather than assuming every water type or biome has the same fish.
When choosing between available spots, consider more than species: body size and current stock, access for workers, existing fishing pressure, and whether pollution or Gill Rot threatens the supply.
How fish stocks work—and why a lake can run dry
Fish in a body of water share one population pool. Catching fish reduces that pool, so several zones on the same lake do not represent separate stocks. The wiki reports replenishment at 2.5% of maximum population per day when Gill Rot is not active; because the page is a stub and some implementation details are flagged for verification, treat that as a wiki-derived figure, not a guaranteed rate for every version.
Fishing outcomes can include negative results, pollution-related toxfish, rare catches, uncommon fish, and common fish. Batch size is affected by Fishing Yield and the population level, according to the wiki. The practical takeaway is that a larger stock and better yield can help, but repeated work still consumes the same local resource.

Ludeon warns that overfishing can empty a lake, while Gill Rot—a parasitic fungus—can make the fish supply vanish. Avoid building the colony’s whole food plan around one fishing spot. Keep another dependable source, such as crops, pemmican, or wild game, and scale fishing back when the stock is low or illness threatens it.
Fish can also provide variety and trade value, but those benefits do not remove the risk of relying on a vulnerable local population. Ludeon’s advice is direct: “Skilled fishermen are faster and catch more, but fish responsibly – overfishing could empty your only lake.”
What else can fishing catch?
Ordinary fish are not the only possible result. Ludeon says rare catches may include treasure, drugs, bionic limbs, and other unusual items. Because the wiki’s catch details are incomplete and outcomes can vary, treat these as possible surprises rather than a predictable source of equipment or supplies.

Can you play an active fishing minigame?
Yes, through the optional [WG] Let’s Fishing! mod. Its listing describes a minigame where players watch for bites, manage line tension, and influence how much fish is landed. If you ignore the “Take the rod” prompt, colonists continue fishing automatically as with the regular mechanic. The listing reports that Odyssey is required and was updated August 4, 2026 for version 1.6. Check the current mod listing for compatibility before installing; availability and compatibility may change.
