Epic’s Xbox refund-system malfunction let some refunded V-Bucks—and items bought or gifted with them—remain in accounts. When Epic later processed backdated refunds, affected accounts could lose items or show a negative V-Bucks balance. Epic says most players used refunds in good faith, while some exploited the malfunction at scale; the available official information does not establish that every affected player deliberately exploited it.
What happened with Fortnite’s Xbox refund glitch?
Epic says its Xbox refund system malfunctioned from December 2024 through July 2025. In normal circumstances, when V-Bucks are spent and the purchase is later refunded, Epic can remove items bought or gifted with that currency, and the account may owe V-Bucks if its balance cannot cover the reversal. During the malfunction, some refunded currency and related items remained in accounts.
Epic began processing backdated Xbox refund requests on September 4, 2025. The company’s September 2025 update described the malfunction and explained how it handled affected accounts. Epic also said it would restore items it had removed earlier that week from accounts with fewer than seven refunds since December 2024, acknowledging that it had not updated those accounts’ V-Bucks balances immediately. Items remained removed for accounts with seven or more refunds, and for items gifted by players who met that threshold. Epic clarified that these were real-money refunds made outside Fortnite—not in-game return tickets.
Epic’s support guidance also refers to an Xbox exploit that faked V-Bucks purchases as a possible reason for currency or items to be removed. The support material and the Xbox refund update describe related but distinct aspects of the issue: one mentions the exploit, while the update explains a malfunction in refund processing. The official sources do not provide a count of affected players or establish a new exploit or enforcement action on October 8, 2026.

Why can Fortnite show a negative V-Bucks balance?
A negative balance can result when a refund or payment reversal removes V-Bucks after the account has already spent them. Epic says it may reverse recent Item Shop purchases up to 90 days old and recent gifts to recover the amount. If the account does not have enough eligible items, gifts, or V-Bucks to cover the reversal, the balance can go negative. Epic’s item-removal support page says players can clear a negative balance by purchasing enough V-Bucks to cover the amount owed.
What to do if an item or V-Bucks were removed
- Check the transaction route. Epic lists refunds or payment reversals, a gift sender’s refund, and use of an Xbox exploit faking V-Bucks purchases among the reasons items or currency may be removed.
- If you believe the removal was an error, contact the payment provider. Epic directs players to the provider involved. For purchases made through a third party such as Microsoft or Sony, contact that platform’s support.
- Know the support limit. Epic says Player Support cannot restore items removed because of the Xbox exploit.
- For a negative balance, check the amount shown in your account. Epic says purchasing enough V-Bucks to cover the debt reverses the negative balance. That does not resolve a dispute about whether a refund or reversal was valid; raise that issue with the relevant payment provider.
How this differs from a chargeback
A V-Bucks refund reversal and a real-money chargeback are not the same process. Epic’s chargeback policy says associated items are removed after a chargeback. After two or more chargebacks, an account may be blocked from purchases across Epic products for up to one year. The policy says V-Bucks gift cards acquired outside Fortnite’s in-game Item Shop may still be purchased and redeemed during that restriction; this does not mean a gift card settles an account dispute.

For a chargeback or a purchase made through an external platform, identify which company handled the transaction before seeking help. Epic’s chargeback guidance covers Epic-account consequences, while Epic’s item-removal guidance points players to the payment provider for disputed removals and third-party purchases.
Do not confuse this with the FTC Fortnite refund program
The Federal Trade Commission’s Fortnite refund program concerns allegations involving unwanted in-game purchases, charges made by children without a parent’s permission, and account access restrictions after some users disputed charges. It is separate from Epic’s Xbox refund-system malfunction.

The FTC says it sent 969,173 payments totaling more than $126 million in June 2025 to eligible U.S. players who had filed valid claims by February 14, 2025. Its Fortnite Refunds page says the claims deadline was July 9, 2025 and that it is no longer accepting claims. The FTC said it expected to make additional payments in 2026 after reviewing and validating claims.
