The three counters commonly suggested when it launched—shooting at exposed feet, using explosives, and flanking—are historical advice from January 2024, not verified tactics for the October 2026 game build. Epic said the launch version could be knocked temporarily out of position after taking enough damage, but current availability and shield-specific counter mechanics are not established here. Epic’s Chapter 5 Season 1 notes provide the launch description; check your current playlist and official patch notes before relying on any of the tactics below.
What is Fortnite’s Riot Shield?
Epic calls the item the Ballistic Shield. It arrived in Battle Royale with Chapter 5 Season 1. At launch, Epic described it as protection that let its user fire a pistol. The notes said it had “infinite Health,” while also explaining that enough damage could temporarily knock it from in front of the player. The shield’s charge could hit and knock back opponents or damage a building piece. Those are launch-era details, not confirmation of how the item behaves in a later build.
The informal “Riot Shield” name in the title refers to this same item; it should not be confused with a Shield Bubble, which is a different item.
How the January 2024 article suggested countering it
A January 4, 2024 PiunikaWeb article proposed three approaches. Treat them as historical suggestions rather than guaranteed counters or current patch guidance: the available sources do not verify their present-day effectiveness, exact damage requirements, or interactions.
#1 Best Overall

- REMOVABLE SCOPE: Includes a scope that you can attach and remove from the blaster to help you line up your shots. Play Fortnite in real life with the Nerf Fortnite SR dart blaster.
- INCLUDES 8 NERF DARTS: Comes with 8 Official Nerf Elite darts that are tested and approved for performance and quality
| Approach | Angle and resource | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Shoot at exposed feet | Try to hit below the shield while the user faces you; uses ordinary weapon fire. | Keeps you facing the shield, and depends on whether the target’s lower body is exposed. This is the 2024 article’s suggestion, not a verified current mechanic. |
| Use explosives | Historical suggestion to use an explosive item rather than rely only on direct shots. | Requires access to an explosive and does not establish that a particular explosive bypasses or defeats the shield in the current game. |
| Flank the user | Approach from the side rather than contesting the shield head-on; relies on positioning and weapon fire. | May require closing distance or leaving cover, creating risk if the user turns or charges. The exact interaction is not confirmed for current builds. |
Epic’s launch description supports only the broad idea that incoming damage could disrupt the shield’s position; it does not provide a current damage threshold or identify a best weapon. Likewise, the 2024 article’s mention of explosives does not establish how a specific explosive behaves against the item today.
Is the Ballistic Shield overpowered?
There is no official balance verdict in the sources available for this article, and no cited pick rate, win rate, or counter-success statistic that would settle the question. “Overpowered” is therefore a player judgment that depends on the encounter, the available counterplay, and the game version. A shield that is difficult to challenge from the front may feel stronger when opponents cannot reposition or apply pressure; that observation is not evidence of a current balance problem.

Is it currently in Fortnite, and do these counters still work?
Current availability by playlist and current shield-specific counters are unresolved. Epic’s November 29, 2025 Chapter Seven launch notes list items unvaulted for that update, but do not list the Ballistic Shield. That dated omission does not prove the item was absent from every playlist then, or that it is unavailable in October 2026. Read the Chapter Seven launch update for the changes it does document.
Epic’s October 1, 2026 news index shows recent Fortnite updates but does not report the Ballistic Shield’s status or mechanics. Check Epic’s Fortnite news index alongside the current in-game playlist. If the item is present, treat the three tactics above as possibilities to assess in that version—not as confirmed solutions—and consult patch notes for any shield-specific changes.
