Check for a PS5 system software update
Open Settings > System > System Software > System Software Update and Settings. Install an available update if your console’s system software is out of date.

Back up saved data
Before deleting the affected game or application, back up its saved data. This protects your progress before you remove the software.

Delete and reinstall the affected game or application
Remove the app or game that failed to update, then install it again. PlayStation’s guidance does not specify one technical cause for the error; this is its recommended recovery step.

Restart the PS5
Restart the console after reinstalling the affected software.

Sign out and sign in again
Go to Settings > Users and Accounts > Other > Sign Out, then sign back in.

Wait 24 hours if the error remains
If CE-118866-0 still appears, PlayStation advises waiting 24 hours before trying again.

What the error means—and what is not confirmed
PlayStation describes CE-118866-0 as: “There was an application update error.” Its error-code index lists the same classification. The code identifies an update problem, but PlayStation’s instructions do not name a specific root cause.
That means the official information does not establish that CE-118866-0 is inherently caused by a network connection, insufficient storage, failing hardware, or one particular game. A user may describe the symptom as “Can’t install,” as in this Reddit help thread, but that individual report is not a general diagnosis.
