If Hogwarts Legacy has no sound—or you can hear effects and music but not dialogue—match the game’s audio output to the speakers, TV, or headset you’re actually using. On Windows, also check the game’s individual Volume mixer controls. There isn’t one format that fixes every setup: Portkey Games says results vary with audio hardware.
First, identify what is missing
Check whether all game audio is silent or only dialogue is difficult to hear. If music and effects still play, focus first on console, TV, or headset output settings. If the entire game is silent on Windows while other system sounds work, check its app-specific volume and output routing.
Fix dialogue or game audio on PS5, Xbox Series X|S, or a TV setup
- Match the console output to your equipment. Open the console’s audio settings and choose an output format suited to the connected TV, speakers, or headset. Portkey Games recommends matching system audio output to the connected equipment when dialogue is hard to hear.
- Check the television’s surround setting. If you play through a TV, look in its sound settings and try enabling or disabling surround sound. Portkey Games notes that some TVs support surround sound and that changing this setting may help.
- On PS5, compare formats if dialogue remains hard to hear. Portkey Games says Dolby or DTS may sound better than Linear PCM with some hardware combinations. Treat this as a test, not a universal recommendation: switch back if the change makes dialogue or other audio worse.
- Confirm the equipment supports the selected mode. Hogwarts Legacy supports 3D audio output on PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC. Its official audio FAQ lists surround support up to 7.1 on PS5 and up to 7.1.4 Dolby Atmos on Xbox Series X|S and PC; some configurations may need additional hardware. These are support limits, not a guarantee that every TV or headset can reproduce each mode. See the Portkey Games audio FAQ.
Portkey Games cautions that “Results may vary depending on the audio hardware used.” The FAQ’s specific format guidance covers PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC; do not assume the same format limits or menu steps apply to PS4, Xbox One, or Switch.
Fix app-specific silence on Windows PC
These are Microsoft’s general Windows app-audio steps, not Hogwarts Legacy-specific publisher instructions. They’re useful when the game is silent but Windows sounds or other apps still play.

- Check the game’s volume. Open Settings > System > Sound > Volume mixer. Find Hogwarts Legacy in the app list, make sure it is not muted, and raise its volume.
- Check the game’s output device. In Volume mixer, confirm Hogwarts Legacy is routed to the headphones or speakers currently in use. An app can be sent to a different output from the one selected for other Windows audio.
- Restart Windows audio services if the app remains silent. Microsoft recommends restarting Windows Audio and Windows Audio Endpoint Builder, then testing the game again. You can find service controls by searching Windows for “Services.”
- Update the audio driver and restart the PC. If the simpler checks do not help, update the relevant audio driver and restart. Microsoft lists driver problems as one possible cause; this does not establish that a driver is necessarily the cause of a Hogwarts Legacy issue. Use visual audio cues if you need them
Hogwarts Legacy includes an audio visualizer that displays key sound effects on a wheel around the avatar for deaf or hard-of-hearing players. WB Games describes it as an accessibility feature; it provides visual cues rather than repairing silent speakers, missing dialogue, or a muted game.
