In core-series Pokémon games from Generation III onward, a Pokémon that is Fire-type when Flame Orb tries to inflict burn is immune to becoming burned. The main historical exception is Generation II, when Tri Attack could burn Fire-type Pokémon.
How Flame Orb works
Flame Orb is a held item introduced in Generation IV. It attempts to burn its holder at the end of a turn. Scarlet and Violet describe it as an orb that gives off heat and affects its holder with a burn during battle; that description explains the item’s effect, not an override to type-based immunity. See Bulbapedia’s Flame Orb reference.

For a modern core-series Fire-type holder, the attempted new burn is blocked by the Pokémon’s current type. In other words, Flame Orb does not bypass Fire-type immunity.
Which generation is it?
- Generation II: Fire-type Pokémon could be burned by Tri Attack, an exception to the later rule.
- Generation III onward: Fire-type Pokémon cannot normally become burned. Since Flame Orb was introduced in Generation IV, its ordinary burn attempt cannot newly burn a Fire-type holder. The cross-generation mechanics are summarized in Bulbapedia’s Burn reference.
What if the Pokémon is already burned?
Immunity to becoming burned does not cure a burn that is already present. If a Pokémon is burned and then gains Fire typing during battle, it retains the status. The distinction is whether the game is trying to inflict a new burn or the Pokémon already has one.

What if its type changes during battle?
Use the Pokémon’s typing when the burn attempt occurs. Terastallization changes a Pokémon to its Tera Type in battle, as described on The Pokémon Company’s Scarlet and Violet battle page. That type change is separate from an existing burn: gaining Fire typing does not remove one already inflicted.
Does Flame Orb bypass other burn prevention?
Some burn-prevention rules have specific exceptions. The mechanics reference notes Flame Orb as an exception to the usual protection that Substitute provides against burn. That specialized interaction should not be read as an exception to Fire-type immunity: a Fire-type Pokémon still cannot be newly burned by Flame Orb in the modern core-series rule set.
What does burn do?
Burn ordinarily deals end-of-turn damage and reduces damage from physical moves, but the damage fraction varies by generation. A Pokémon with Guts is a notable strategic exception to the usual reduction in physical damage. Because these effects change across games, check the relevant generation’s rules rather than assuming one damage amount applies throughout the series; the Burn reference summarizes the generational differences.
