The original Fractal Design Refine is a desk chair for gaming and home-office use, with unusually broad adjustment options and a restrained, non-racing-seat look. Its strongest features are its seat-and-back synchro-tilt, adjustable lumbar support, and choice of Mesh, Fabric, or Alcantara upholstery. It is not a guaranteed fit for every body, and its armrests can shift if bumped or leaned on.
What makes the original Refine different?
The Refine is built around adjustability rather than a fixed racing-chair shape. You can change seat height and depth, move the armrests in several directions, adjust lumbar support, and remove or reposition the memory-foam headrest. Its synchro-tilt mechanism moves the seat and backrest together; it is not an independent backrest recline.
Fractal Design lists Mesh, Fabric, and Alcantara versions. The surface and dimensions vary by version, so the model name alone does not tell you exactly how the chair will feel or fit.
How the adjustments work
Seat and lumbar support
The seat slides forward and back to change its depth, and its height adjusts within a range that depends on the upholstery version. A dial moves the lumbar support up and down and forward or back. The headrest is height-adjustable and removable.
#1 Best Overall
- Enjoy the lasting comfort of foam cushioning or adaptive mesh, a memory foam headrest and soft, padded armrests.
- Introduce soft fabric, breathable mesh or Alcantara to your gaming station paired with a clean yet dynamic design expression.
- Recline ergonomically with the synchro-tilt mechanism which moves in tandem with your body, supported by lockable tilt and adjustable tension.
- Find your ideal gaming position with 4D armrests, a height-adjustable headrest, and a height and depth-adjustable seat.
- Adjust the depth and height of the built-in lumbar support to optimize ergonomic comfort for your back.
Armrests and tilt
The armrests adjust up and down, laterally, forward and back, and rotate. The tilt can be left free or locked in one of 11 positions, with adjustable tension. Because the seat and back move together, the tilt is better understood as a coordinated rocking motion than as a separately reclining backrest.

Comfort and the main drawback
PCWorld’s November 4, 2024 review praised the Refine’s construction, ergonomics, backrest, synchro-tilt, and neck cushion, and described it as comfortable for long sitting. The reviewer also found the armrests easy to move accidentally and slightly wobbly. PCWorld’s conclusion was: “The Fractal Design Refine is an excellent, ergonomic gaming chair that is also suitable for the home office.” That is one publication’s assessment, not a universal comfort guarantee.
PCGamesN, reviewing the chair on October 21, 2024, likewise noted that the forward-and-back armrest slide does not lock. It can move when you press on the arms while sitting down or standing up. If you use armrests to push yourself upright, that detail is worth considering.

Choosing Mesh, Fabric, or Alcantara
Fractal Design offers all three surfaces, but the available reviews do not establish a controlled comparison of their comfort, temperature, or long-term wear. PCWorld preferred upholstery to mesh for extended sitting; that is the reviewer’s preference rather than a finding that applies to every user.
- Compare the actual dimensions: Mesh has a slightly higher seat-height range and wider, deeper seat than Fabric in PCWorld’s listed measurements. The cited measurements do not establish corresponding seat width or depth for Alcantara.
- Consider your preferred surface: The publications identify material choice as an important part of the decision, but do not provide measured performance comparisons across every version.
- Check the precise version before buying: Confirm both the upholstery and dimensions for the listing you are considering; do not assume all Refine variants have identical seat measurements.
Will the Refine fit you?
Fractal Design recommends the original Refine for people about 1.65–2.0 m tall and 60–125 kg, and gives it a maximum capacity of 125 kg. Those are manufacturer guidelines, not a personalized fit guarantee. Height and weight alone do not establish whether the seat depth, desk height, or armrest position will suit you.

Compare the relevant version’s seat dimensions with your own leg length and your desk setup. If possible, try the chair or confirm the seller’s return terms before committing, especially if seat depth or armrest stability is a deciding factor.
Warranty, standards, and generation
Fractal Design states a five-year warranty for mechanical parts and three years for soft parts, including upholstery, the lumbar support pad, arm caps, and headrest. Coverage is subject to the manufacturer’s applicable regional terms. Fractal also says the chair meets BIFMA X5.1 and EN1335-1; these are manufacturer statements about standards, not evidence of a particular ergonomic or medical outcome.

This review concerns the original Refine, whose stated maximum capacity is 125 kg. Refine 2 is a distinct model: Fractal’s product information describes a dual-pad lumbar design, an armrest depth lock, updated materials and casters, revised seat foam, and capacity up to 135 kg. Do not assume those changes apply to the original chair.
