Why was Geoff Keighley wearing a clown nose?
On August 18, 2025, the day before Gamescom Opening Night Live, Keighley posted a selfie wearing a red clown nose with the caption “First time?” GamesRadar reported that fans read it as a Silksong tease. The caption also worked as a nod to a running fandom joke: fans who repeatedly expected an announcement at a showcase would describe themselves as clowns for believing again. Some replies, including “DAMN YOU, GEOFFFFF!”, captured that mix of anticipation and exasperation.
The selfie was a red clown nose, not a full clown costume, and the post did not confirm that a release date—or any specific reveal—was coming. Its significance was the wink to fans, not a promise.
What did Gamescom Opening Night Live actually reveal?
During the August 19 show, Keighley introduced brief new Silksong gameplay and said the game was “100% actually launching this year,” according to PC Gamer. A playable demo was also available at Gamescom. The appearance turned the clown-nose tease into a real update: fans got footage and confirmation of a 2025 release window.

But the segment did not announce the exact day. The distinction matters: “launching this year” narrowed the timing without telling players when to expect the game.
When did Silksong come out?
Team Cherry announced the date separately. On September 4, 2025, it posted, “Hollow Knight: Silksong is available now!” and said the game had launched across platforms, with day-one availability on Xbox Game Pass. The story, then, was not that Keighley’s selfie revealed the date. It was that a joke about fans’ repeated hopes preceded an actual showcase appearance, while the date arrived later from the developer.

How many people have played or bought Silksong?
In its December 2025 holiday update, Team Cherry said more than seven million people had purchased Silksong, with millions more playing through Xbox Game Pass. That is the developer’s reported figure, not an independently audited sales total. The same update named Fangamer as a merchandise partner, but it does not establish current stock or availability for any particular item.
