Its appeal is clearest if you enjoy building a relationship with a horse, riding deliveries, exploring and managing survival in an evolving game. If you want the main story and a fuller release now, waiting makes more sense.
Why I was skeptical
A game about riding a horse across a broad landscape can sound like a premise that depends on atmosphere more than meaningful play. I was wary that the horse would be transportation between conventional objectives, and that an open world might feel empty without a strong story to pull me through it.

That skepticism matters because The Legend of Khiimori is still in Early Access, and its current scope is not the same as the complete game its developers plan to make. The main story is not included in the current build, according to a developer Steam Community result. The question, then, is whether the systems that are here can carry the experience on their own.
What changed my mind: the horse is the center, not a vehicle
The game casts the player as a courier rider in 13th-century Mongolia, as described by its Steam listing. Taming, bonding with, breeding and training horses sit alongside deliveries, exploration, survival and quests. That combination gives the ride a purpose beyond reaching the next marker: the horse is part of the game’s core loop, while courier work gives travel a practical shape.

That is the idea that won me over. Rather than expecting a constant stream of story beats, I began to see the attraction in the relationship between preparing a horse, taking on a route and moving through an open environment. The premise is distinctive because the horse-focused systems and the courier role reinforce each other. This is a description of the game’s design, not an independent assessment of how accurately it portrays Mongolian history.
What the Early Access build offers—and what it leaves out
Steam describes the current Early Access version as containing the core gameplay loop across a portion of the open world. The developers frame Early Access as a collaborative period for collecting feedback, iterating on core systems and refining the game. They estimate approximately 12 months in Early Access, while also saying they cannot give an exact date and will prioritize quality.

In the current build
- The core horse, courier, exploration and survival activities.
- A portion of the open world rather than the full planned world.

Planned for the full version
- A main story, a larger open world, more side quests and areas.
- Refined horse and survival mechanics, voice acting, full localization, improved performance and deeper environmental storytelling.
These are developer plans, not a guarantee that every item will arrive on a particular schedule. A developer community result currently targets Fall 2027 for the full release, including console versions; that target can change. BackerKit’s FAQ says console Early Access is not offered and describes PC Early Access keys for Windows through Steam or Epic, which is separate from confirmation of a final console release date.
Should you play now or wait?
The right choice depends less on a universal verdict than on what you want from the game today. Steam’s snapshot on October 8, 2026 showed 1,943 all-time reviews with 81% positive, alongside 102 reviews from the last 30 days with 57% positive. Those are different time windows and sample sizes, not a single stable verdict; both can change as the game and its audience evolve.

My shift from skeptic to fan came from understanding what the game is asking me to value: the horse, the work of riding deliveries and the time spent in its landscape. That is a compelling foundation for players who enjoy systems-led exploration. It is not a substitute for the absent story if story is the reason you would buy it.

The developers say they chose Early Access “to build a collaborative relationship with our players as we shape the game’s expansive world and deep mechanics.” That makes the current version an invitation to engage with a work in progress, not a claim that the finished experience has already arrived.

So my recommendation is conditional: consider the current PC Early Access build if its horse-centered courier loop is already appealing to you. If you need a complete narrative or want the promised additions in place before committing, waiting is a reasonable choice. The appeal is real in the game’s premise; how much it works for you depends on whether that premise is enough without the main story.
