What is the Genshin Impact whitewashing petition about?
The campaign, titled “Stop Cultural Appropriation and Whitewashing in MiHoYo Games,” focuses on character designs in Genshin Impact’s Sumeru and Natlan regions and also mentions Penacony in Honkai: Star Rail. The petition argues that these designs draw on Indigenous cultures without adequate representation. Those are the petitioners’ claims; the available sources do not independently establish the cultural inspirations or adjudicate every character design.
The petition’s central request is for HoYoverse to stop what organizers describe as cultural appropriation and whitewashing, and to commit to respectful and accurate representation. The counts come from different dates and sources, so they show how the campaign’s displayed support changed over time—not how representative its signers are of Genshin Impact players or the wider public.
What happened after the petition launched?
On July 15, 2024, the organizer posted an update titled “35,000 signatures!!” and also described boycott activity and social-media rankings. Those latter points were organizer claims in an advocacy update, not independently confirmed measurements. Two days later, VideoGamer reported that the petition had passed 67,000 signatures and covered comments from voice actors.
VideoGamer reported that Amber May, who voices Dehya and Yanqing, said “politely asking to see more accuracy in a portrayed culture is not a ‘forced agenda’.” The report also quoted Allegra Clark, voice actor for Beidou and Acheron, saying “it’s just disappointing” when minorities are not represented properly. These are reported statements by the actors, separate from the petition’s own demands.
Did HoYoverse respond?
VideoGamer reported on July 17, 2024 that it had reached out to HoYoverse for comment. HoYoverse’s August 28, 2024 Natlan announcement described Tribal Chronicles as quests intended to give players a deeper understanding of the region’s stories, people, and traditions. That announcement did not address the petition’s specific criticism, so it should not be treated as a direct response. The cited sources do not establish whether HoYoverse later issued a dedicated response.
