You encounter him at Bilehaven, near the top of Bilewater, after clearing an enemy gauntlet. His reported attacks include bouncing acid orbs, an inhale that can swallow Hornet, a sweeping spike-ball hazard, and Stilkin ambushes.
Where to find Groal the Great
Groal waits in Bilehaven, at the top of Bilewater. Before he appears, Hornet must clear five waves containing Stilkin, Stilkin Trappers, Swamp Squits, and spike-ball traps. Once the gauntlet is over, Groal rises from the water and the boss fight begins. The location and encounter sequence are reported by the Hollow Knight Wiki; a Neoseeker walkthrough also places the fight near the end of Bilewater.
Groal’s attacks and phase change
The attack details below come from the community-maintained Hollow Knight Wiki, which cites in-game material; they are not an official developer mechanics guide. Groal dives between attacks, so watch the arena and respond to each move rather than assuming he will stay in one place.
Bouncing acid orbs
Groal launches two explosive acid orbs that bounce through the arena. Keep moving and avoid the orbs’ paths as they rebound.
Inhale and swallow
When Groal begins inhaling, move away quickly. The Neoseeker walkthrough recommends running, dashing, or using Clawline to escape the pull. If Hornet is swallowed, that guide advises pressing the attack button repeatedly to get out; treat this as walkthrough advice rather than a guaranteed universal tactic.
Sweeping spike-ball trap
A spike-ball hazard sweeps across the arena. Avoid its path and be ready to reposition instead of focusing only on Groal while it passes.

Stilkin ambushes
Stilkin or Stilkin Trappers can ambush Hornet during the encounter. Keep track of the smaller enemies as well as Groal so they do not catch you while you are dodging another attack.
Second phase
The wiki reports that Groal’s second phase starts at 390 HP and adds a sequence of two or three Vengeful Soul blasts. This is a reported in-game mechanics threshold, not a developer-published statistic.

Rewards for defeating Groal
The Hollow Knight Wiki lists a bench and Seeker’s Soul as rewards. Seeker’s Soul is required for the Silk and Soul wish, making the encounter relevant to that wish as well as to progress through the area.

In the wiki’s account of the game’s lore, Groal is both chief and chaplain of the Stilkin. He is hostile toward the Citadel over the conditions in the tribe’s home and took a Snail Shaman’s Soul rather than form an alliance. His Hunter’s Journal entry, as transcribed by the wiki, describes him as: “Chief and chaplain of the Stilkin, forever raging against the Citadel that chokes their caves and sees them suffer.”
