Sony reported that Ghost of Yōtei sold an estimated 3.3 million copies worldwide in its first 32 days. That is a strong early result, but it does not prove that boycott calls had no effect—and it does not establish that the game is currently the best-selling PS5 title worldwide.
What Sony’s sales figure actually shows
Sony Interactive Entertainment’s FY2026 Q1 supplemental information lists Ghost of Yōtei at 3.3 million global sell-through units as of November 2, 2025, 32 days after its October 2 release. Sony describes first-party sell-through figures as estimates and excludes add-on content. Sony FY2026 Q1 Supplemental Information

Sell-through means copies sold to players, rather than units shipped to retailers. The figure is a dated cumulative total, not a live sales count or a ranking against every PS5 game.
Does that mean the boycott failed?
No. Online users called for a boycott after controversy over a social-media comment by Sucker Punch developer Drew Harrison about Charlie Kirk. Those calls document online reaction; the available evidence does not establish how many people participated or how many would otherwise have bought the game.

- Stunning graphics and gameplay, explore the wild and striking lands around Mount Yotei on foot or horseback. Travel picturesque parts of northern Japan through grasslands, snowy ridges, fields of wildflowers, and more.
- Discover renegade combat, engage in lawless katana combat and battles with adversaires. Train with various sensei as you find and learn to use each new weapon.
- An unconventional story and journey, take in the cultural beauty of Japan, bathe in an onsen, visit shrines to pray, try Sumi-e painting, and so much more.
- Choose your weapon, battle Atsu's opponents as you see fit, with levelled-up dual katanas, odachi, kusarigama and other new weapons.
A substantial sales total can coexist with some boycott effect. Without participation data or a credible comparison with sales absent the controversy, the 3.3 million figure cannot show whether boycott calls changed purchases. Nor does a viral call by itself demonstrate a meaningful commercial impact.
Is it the best-selling PS5 game worldwide?
The evidence cited here does not establish that. Sony’s figure shows Ghost of Yōtei’s early global sales, but Sony’s table covers selected first-party releases and does not provide a current, comprehensive comparison across all PS5 games.

Thirsty for revenge, she travels through the beautiful, rugged landscapes of northern Japan, hunting those who killed her family many years earlier.
- Sixteen years after her family’s death, Atsu’s quest across Ezo brings her to unexplored lands in search of a gang of six outlaws, but she finds much more than vengeance. Throughout her journey, Atsu will discover unlikely allies, and greater bonds than she could have imagined.
Alinea Analytics estimated that Ghost of Yōtei sold 1.1 million copies during the portion of 2026 it analyzed, making it the top Sony game on PlayStation by estimated copies sold and revenue in that analysis. That is an analyst estimate with a Sony-game scope, not a worldwide ranking across all publishers and PS5 titles. Alinea Analytics

What a fair sales comparison needs
Rankings are meaningful only when the compared figures use the same measurement and scope. Check whether they count sales to players, retail shipments, or downloads; whether the period is a month, calendar year, or lifetime; and whether the comparison is global, limited to PlayStation, or restricted to Sony releases. The ranking also needs a clear date and a defined set of games.
Until a source supplies a current, comparable global ranking across PS5 games, the defensible conclusion is that Ghost of Yōtei had a strong first 32 days—not that it is the best-selling PS5 game worldwide.
