Ghost of Tsushima is an open-world action-adventure whose strongest idea is also its central tension: Jin Sakai can fight as a samurai or use stealth tactics that challenge the code he was taught to uphold. TIME critic Patrick Austin praised how closely those choices fit Jin’s story, while also pointing to repetitive liberation tasks and friction in collecting upgrade materials. That balance makes the game most compelling when its combat and character conflict meet—and less compelling when exploration becomes a checklist.
What is Ghost of Tsushima about?
Set on 13th-century Tsushima, the game follows Jin Sakai after the defending force is defeated during the Mongol invasion. As he tries to protect the island, he must decide whether to follow the samurai ideal represented by his uncle, Lord Shimura, or adopt tactics such as assassination and sabotage that can be more effective against the invaders. TIME’s Patrick Austin framed this conflict as the story’s defining pressure point in his July 14, 2020 review.
The premise gives the action a narrative purpose: stealth is not simply an alternate way to clear an outpost. It is a choice that sits uneasily beside Jin’s inherited code. That alignment between character and mechanics was a major strength for Austin, who wrote that the mechanics were so suited to the story that each move felt like Jin’s own.
How does combat and stealth work?
Austin’s review describes a range of approaches rather than a single required combat style. Jin can meet enemies directly in standoffs and sword fights, use a bow, throw bombs or kunai, infiltrate camps, create distractions, and assassinate targets. Duels offer another kind of confrontation. The variety lets players shift tactics between encounters, while the story gives that shift an added moral dimension.

The appeal is the contrast: direct combat presents Jin as a conventional warrior, while stealth makes the conflict between his duty and his methods harder to ignore. Austin’s July 14, 2020 review describes those approaches as features; it does not establish a comprehensive feature list for every current edition.
Does the open world stay varied?
The activities described by Austin include liberating locations, collecting resources for upgrades, practicing at bamboo strikes, following foxes to shrines, visiting hot springs, and composing haiku. These offer breaks from combat and different ways to engage with the island.

The drawback is repetition. Austin criticized liberation tasks for becoming repetitive and described friction in gathering materials needed for upgrades. Players who enjoy clearing map locations and collecting resources may find a satisfying rhythm; those who want every side activity to introduce a distinct challenge may be more sensitive to the repeated structure.
Which edition does this review cover?
The title “Ghost of Tsushima Review” does not identify a platform or edition, so there is no basis here to claim a firsthand assessment of a particular release. The cited critical judgment is Austin’s review of the game in 2020. Later Director’s Cut editions add content and platform-specific features that should be considered separately from that review.

PS4 Director’s Cut
PlayStation’s Store listing describes the PS4 Director’s Cut upgrade as requiring the base game, which is sold separately. The listing includes the Iki Island expansion—with a new story, mini-games, enemy types, and more—as well as Legends online co-op, a digital mini art book, director’s commentary with a Japanese historian, and in-game bonuses. PC Director’s Cut
PlayStation lists May 16, 2024 as the PC release date for Director’s Cut. Its PC feature page describes unlocked frame rates, graphics options for a range of hardware, NVIDIA DLSS 3, AMD FSR 3, Intel XeSS, NVIDIA Reflex and DLAA, mouse-and-keyboard controls, DualSense features, and ultrawide, super-ultrawide, and triple-monitor support. Compatible hardware is required for these features; full DualSense functionality requires a wired connection.

What are the PC requirements and performance targets?
PlayStation’s PC support page publishes performance tiers, not a guarantee that every system will achieve them. All four tiers list 75 GB of storage. An SSD is recommended for minimum and specified for the higher tiers.

What accessibility and language options are documented for PC?
PlayStation’s PC support page documents options that can make combat, navigation, and reading easier to tailor. Listed features include:
- Subtitle backdrops, speaker names, selectable subtitle colours, and large text.
- Enhanced parry and dodge cues, increased Guiding Wind visibility, and simplified mini-game controls.
- Toggleable button holds, aim assist, off-screen projectile indicators, and a dark flash-bomb effect.
These are PC-specific details in PlayStation’s cited support material; confirm availability for the platform and edition you use rather than assuming every version has the same options. The PC language list includes English voice and text and Japanese voice among other options. PlayStation advises checking the current support page because regional language choices may differ.
How does PC Legends multiplayer work?
Legends is the online co-op mode listed with Director’s Cut. For PC Legends multiplayer, PlayStation says a PlayStation sign-in is required for online multiplayer and the PlayStation overlay. Its support page also says online multiplayer is unavailable on Steam Deck. Cross-play with PS4 and PS5 is available by invitation while in beta, so check the current support page before relying on that feature.
Who is Ghost of Tsushima for?
The game is a strong fit for players drawn to sword combat, stealth alternatives, and a story that makes those tactics part of its protagonist’s moral conflict. Its activity mix also gives exploration room beyond combat. The main reservation supported by Austin’s review is that liberation tasks can repeat and gathering upgrade materials can feel frictional. Whether that trade-off works depends on how much a player enjoys open-world clearing and resource collection.
