What the day-one patch changes
DayOne’s August 26, 2025 patch summary, attributing the update details to The Coalition, describes stability and bug fixes intended to reduce crashes and stalls, particularly on PC. The listed changes include:
- Multiple crash fixes and incremental performance enhancements across PC and console.
- Gameplay, user-interface and localization bug fixes, plus refinements to settings behavior.
- A PC fix for a persistent low-frame-rate issue that occurred when a DualSense controller was connected.
- Handheld mouse-sensitivity corrections on certain handheld PCs.
- Improved switching between controller and mouse-and-keyboard UI modes on handhelds.
The patch summary quotes The Coalition as saying the update was intended “to ensure a smoother gameplay experience.” That describes the developer’s aim, not a measured result for every player or device.
What the handheld fixes do—and do not—mean
Input and interface behavior
The handheld changes address how input works and which interface mode appears when switching between controller and mouse and keyboard. They can make controls and menus behave more appropriately on affected devices, but the listed changes are not a handheld performance guarantee.

Steam Deck compatibility status
Reloaded is labeled Steam Deck Verified in SteamDB’s compatibility record. That metadata says the default controller configuration exposes all functionality, text is legible, default graphics perform well, and the game runs successfully on SteamOS. The record’s test timestamp is June 19, 2025, so it is a dated compatibility assessment rather than fresh testing of the game after the launch update. It also notes that an external Bluetooth or USB controller may not activate by default; a player may need to select it manually through the Steam Deck Quick Access Menu.
Why Verified does not settle performance
PC Gamer’s review testing reported weak GPU utilization on its ROG Ally, with CPU load and limited VRAM bandwidth constraining smooth, good-looking play. The reviewer advised Steam Deck owners to skip the game. Those observations describe the reviewer’s tested hardware and build, not every device or a current universal result. The same review found that tested modern desktop GPU systems handled the Ultra preset without difficulty; for its tested PC configurations, it suggested the Low preset with Medium texture quality. That setting advice is not established as a universal handheld fix.

PC features and system requirements are not handheld results
Steam’s store listing markets the PC game as optimized for PC and handhelds. It lists ultrawide support, benchmark mode, variable refresh rate, mouse and keyboard, FSR 3.1 and DLSS 3.5 Super Resolution, and controller remapping. Those features describe the PC release; they do not establish how well a particular handheld runs it.
Steam’s listed minimum Windows requirements are a four-core Ryzen 3 or Intel i5 Skylake processor, 8 GB of RAM, and Radeon RX 480/RX 5300, GeForce GTX 1650/1050 Ti, or Intel Arc A380 graphics, with 70 GB of storage. These are Windows PC store requirements, not a promise that every handheld meets them or performs well.

Game and platform context
Gears of War: Reloaded is a remaster of the original game, with the bonus campaign act and post-launch maps, characters and cosmetics included. The Coalition is the developer and Xbox Game Studios the publisher; Steam lists the PC release date as August 26, 2025. Its listing includes solo play, online co-op, online PvP, cross-platform multiplayer, Steam Cloud and Easy Anti-Cheat.
The official Gears page describes campaign co-op, cross-play, cross-progression, remastered assets and lighting, HDR/Dolby Vision, and multiplayer up to 120 FPS. It says cross-progression requires signing in with a Microsoft account. Xbox Wire announced the game for Xbox Series X|S, Xbox PC, Xbox Cloud Gaming, PlayStation 5 and Steam, with an August 26, 2025 release date; its platform announcement is launch-era context. The PC and handheld fixes in the patch summary should not be read as applying only to one launcher or as evidence of equal performance across platforms.

How to judge whether it will work well on your device
“Supported” can refer to different things: a compatibility label, working controls, or sustained performance. For a useful device-specific assessment, separate these questions:
- Input and UI: Do controller and mouse-and-keyboard controls work, and does the interface switch to the mode you are using?
- Performance: Does the device sustain an acceptable frame rate with consistent frame times during play?
- Image quality: Can it maintain a readable handheld resolution and texture quality?
- Software compatibility: Does the game work with the device’s operating system and launcher?
- Evidence: Is the claim an official compatibility label, dated compatibility metadata or a named reviewer’s test on specific hardware?
The day-one update addresses concrete PC and handheld issues, but the available evidence does not establish smooth performance across all handhelds. Check device-specific testing rather than treating the patch or a compatibility badge as a universal performance verdict.
