Keep broken glass away from bare hands, choose cleanup steps based on what broke and where, and do not pull a shard embedded in a wound. Ordinary household glass, a broken compact fluorescent lamp (CFL), and potentially contaminated workplace glass call for different precautions.
How to clean up broken glass at home
For ordinary, uncontaminated household glass, keep people and pets clear of the area and use tools rather than your hands to collect fragments. The sources cited here do not establish one universal cleanup or disposal protocol for every household breakage; check your local waste or recycling authority for instructions about the item involved. Package sharp pieces so they are less likely to injure someone handling the waste, following local rules.
If a CFL breaks
A broken compact fluorescent lamp needs bulb-specific care. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) advises using stiff paper or cardboard to scoop up glass fragments and powder, then sticky tape to collect smaller remnants. Put the cleanup materials in a sealable container. Read the EPA’s broken-CFL cleanup instructions.
The EPA does not recommend vacuuming during initial cleanup. Its caution is specific to CFLs: vacuuming could spread mercury-containing powder or vapor. The agency says to vacuum only if glass remains after the other cleanup steps. Check local government disposal requirements for the bulb; some localities require fluorescent bulbs to go to a recycling center.
What to do with potentially contaminated workplace glass
Broken glass that may be contaminated with blood or other potentially infectious material is a workplace sharps hazard, not routine household waste. OSHA says not to pick it up directly by hand. Use suitable cleanup tools, follow your workplace training and applicable regulated-waste procedures, and put the glass in a designated sharps container. Do not use a vacuum cleaner for contaminated broken glass. See OSHA’s enforcement guidance on the Bloodborne Pathogens Standard.

OSHA’s joint advisory on glass capillary tubes also describes injury and bloodborne-pathogen exposure risks associated with breakage in workplace settings. Apply the site’s procedures for the specific material and contamination risk rather than improvising a cleanup method. Read the OSHA glass capillary tube advisory.

What to do if glass is stuck in a cut
Do not try to remove an embedded shard yourself. The NHS advises urgent medical help when something is stuck in a cut. As its Cuts and grazes guidance puts it: “If there’s something stuck in the cut, such as a shard of glass – do not try to take it out yourself.”

Seek emergency care if bleeding will not stop, the cut is very large or deep, or there is loss of feeling or difficulty moving near the injury. For a child with glass embedded in a wound, do not remove it; press around the object’s edges rather than directly on it, and take the child to an emergency department or minor injuries unit. See the NHS guidance on what to do if your child has an accident.

For a cut without a stuck object or serious warning signs, NHS first-aid guidance is to stop the bleeding, clean the wound, and cover it with a plaster or dressing. These steps do not replace medical assessment when glass remains in the wound or the injury is serious. See NHS advice on cuts and grazes.
