Contemporaneous reports said a workaround involving the Final Fantasy XV Windows Edition demo executable and Origin preload files made the PC game playable before launch. The preload was officially announced; the alleged encryption failure and exact technical sequence were not confirmed by Square Enix or EA, and PCGamesN said it could not verify the account at the time.
What happened
The story concerned Final Fantasy XV Windows Edition, the PC edition Square Enix announced for Steam, Origin, and the Windows Store. On March 1, 2018, the official FINAL FANTASY XV WINDOWS EDITION Steam community account announced that players could preload the game before its scheduled launch. Its notice said, “you can pre-load FFXV Windows Edition right now so you’ll be able to jump straight into the world of Eos as soon as the game launches next week on Tuesday 6th March.” Steam’s official preload announcement also said a free demo was available and that demo saves and progress would not transfer to the full game.
On March 3, DSOGaming reported that the game had been cracked four days before the March 6 PC release date it cited. PCGamesN covered the claim on March 9, relaying a technical explanation posted on NeoGAF. The reports described a pre-release workaround, not a confirmed breach announcement from EA or Square Enix.
How the reported workaround worked
PCGamesN reported, citing a NeoGAF post, that the Chinese group 3DM used the demo executable to load full-game files from an Origin preload that was reportedly unencrypted. The account said the demo executable did not use Denuvo and that the retail files were not protected by an effective preload lock. DSOGaming published a similar explanation, but it too was secondary reporting.

- Cast of unforgettable characters
- Open world universe to explore
- Latest graphics: fully remastered characters and movies in high definition
- Developer: Square Enix
- Genre: Role-playing game
That distinction matters: the reports describe a weakness in how the demo executable and preload files were handled. They do not establish that Denuvo itself was cracked. PCGamesN explicitly said it could not verify the account at the time, and no official Square Enix or EA postmortem confirming the alleged Origin encryption failure is identified in the available contemporaneous coverage.
Why release dates differ in the coverage
The date depends on which contemporary notice is being cited. Square Enix’s January 16 announcement initially listed March 6, then its February 2 update changed the planned date to March 7. The official Steam preload post on March 1 still described a March 6 launch. DSOGaming’s “four days” framing used March 6; it should not be treated as proof that all storefronts or territories shared the same date.

Square Enix’s announcement of the PC edition and its updated date is available here. The separate Steam notice documents the preload and its own scheduled date, not the reported Origin file-protection issue.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What is confirmed—and what remains a report
| Point | What the contemporary sources support |
|---|---|
| PC edition and storefronts | Square Enix announced Windows PC availability through Steam, Origin, and the Windows Store. |
| Preload | The official Steam community account announced that Windows Edition could be preloaded before its scheduled launch. |
| Demo and save transfer | The Steam notice announced a free demo and said demo saves/progress would not transfer to the full version. |
| Origin files and executable method | PCGamesN, citing a NeoGAF post, and DSOGaming reported the demo-executable/preload explanation; it was not officially confirmed, and PCGamesN said it could not verify the account. |
| Denuvo claim | The reporting said the demo executable did not use Denuvo; it does not establish that Denuvo itself was defeated. |
The best-supported takeaway is therefore narrow: a preload was officially available, while contemporaneous news accounts attributed early playability to a demo-executable and Origin-preload workaround. The precise technical mechanism remains a reported explanation rather than an official, independently verified account.
