That is the strongest story-based interpretation, not a motive confirmed by the developers: the available official sources explain the characters’ history and Kratos’s broader arc, but do not give a definitive reason for this exact refusal.

What Odin offers Kratos
At the beginning of God of War Ragnarök, Odin proposes leaving Kratos and Atreus alone if Atreus gives up searching for Týr. It is a bargain: Odin offers a reprieve in exchange for the pair abandoning a path Odin wants them to stop pursuing. The offer is not, by itself, proof that Odin can be trusted or that the conflict would truly be over.
That distinction matters. Kratos is not simply rejecting the idea of peace; he is declining an agreement whose terms and consequences are controlled by Odin. The game does not establish what would have happened if Kratos had accepted, so claims that Odin certainly would have broken the deal go beyond what the scene confirms.

Why Freya makes the bargain personal
Freya’s history gives Kratos a clear reason to be wary of any arrangement that leaves her vulnerable to Odin. She was Odin’s exiled wife, and she had become Kratos’s enemy after he killed Baldur to save her. PlayStation’s official preview describes Freya as a former ally turned enemy who had sworn vengeance; its story recap recounts her relationship to Odin and Kratos’s intervention against Baldur.
Against that history, it is reasonable to read Kratos’s refusal as unwillingness to trade away his agency—or Freya’s safety—for Odin’s promise. That reading is an inference from the story, not an explanation stated by Kratos or confirmed by the developers. The sources establish the relationships, not a single canonical motive for the exact line.

What Kratos’s refusal says about his choices
Kratos’s answer also fits the Norse-era story’s concern with choice: can a man shaped by violence become a different kind of leader? Santa Monica Studio connects that question to God of War Ragnarök: Valhalla, describing its story as additive to Ragnarök’s ending and saying the final mural leaves Kratos facing whether he should lead in a time of peace. The studio’s framing offers useful context for his development, but it does not directly explain the earlier exchange with Odin.
So the most careful reading is that Kratos rejects Odin’s control over the bargain and the people affected by it. Concern for Freya and distrust of Odin’s terms are grounded interpretations; the wider theme of choosing what kind of leader to be is a related character arc, not a confirmed account of why the writers made Kratos refuse at that moment.

What is confirmed—and what remains interpretation
- Established in the story: Odin offers to leave Kratos and Atreus alone if Atreus stops seeking Týr; Freya is Odin’s exiled wife and has a painful history with Kratos.
- Reasonable interpretation: Kratos will not let Odin set the terms of peace or leave Freya exposed to him.
- Not established: An official, definitive explanation of Kratos’s exact motive, or certainty about what Odin would have done had Kratos accepted.
