Yes—Nintendo Switch 2 plays compatible Nintendo Switch games in both physical and digital formats. But Nintendo cautions that some titles may not be supported or may not work fully, so check its current compatibility information for a specific game. Backward compatibility also does not mean every original Switch accessory or setup item carries over.
How Nintendo Switch game compatibility works
Nintendo Switch 2 supports original Nintendo Switch game cards, and owners can download digital games after linking the Nintendo Account associated with them. Both formats are subject to title compatibility; the console’s different hardware means some games may be unsupported or may not be fully compatible. Nintendo does not promise identical performance or features for every original Switch game. See Nintendo’s compatibility information for the live status of individual titles. For a game published by a company other than Nintendo, Nintendo advises contacting that publisher about specific compatibility questions.

What carries over—and what does not
Game compatibility and accessory compatibility are separate questions. An original controller may pair but still depend on the game, while some familiar hardware cannot be used in the same way—or at all.

Can you keep using Nintendo Switch Online?
Nintendo Switch Online benefits are available on linked Switch 2 and Nintendo Switch systems, though some features are exclusive to Switch 2. Nintendo’s FAQ explains that virtual game cards can be used across paired Switch 2 and Nintendo Switch systems for compatible original Switch games. A Switch 2 Edition game used on the original Switch functions as the Switch version, without its Switch 2-exclusive enhancements. Switch 2-exclusive games cannot be lent to or played on the original Switch through this arrangement. These rules concern linked systems and game formats; they do not change whether an individual original Switch title is compatible with Switch 2. Check Nintendo’s FAQ for the applicable account details.
