Halo: The Master Chief Collection received its Xbox Series X|S optimization in November 2020. The practical differences are resolution and split-screen support: Series X supports up to 4K, while Series S supports 1080p; both support 60 or 120 Hz output in single-player and two-player split-screen. The FOV slider has an important trade-off: you can adjust it only at 60 Hz, not at 120 Hz.
What the Xbox Series X|S optimization changed
Xbox announced the optimization on November 10, 2020. Xbox Wire wrote: “Halo: The Master Chief Collection has also been optimized and will boost all Halo games to run at 4K 120FPS on the system, along with improved split-screen play and FOV sliders for the most immersive Halo experience yet.” That announcement described the upgrade broadly; Halo Support’s platform-specific breakdown clarifies the different resolutions and modes for each console.
The update also brought enhanced graphics settings similar to the PC version, in-game HDR options, Quick Resume, Smart Delivery, and reduced or removed performance throttles found in the original titles. These are release-era optimization features, not a new 2026 upgrade.
Series X vs. Series S: resolution and performance
| Console | Resolution | Supported output | Single-player and two-player split-screen |
|---|---|---|---|
| Xbox Series X | 4K | 60 or 120 Hz | 4K at 60 or 120 Hz |
| Xbox Series S | 1080p | 60 or 120 Hz | 1080p at 60 or 120 Hz |
These are the capabilities listed by Halo Support. The Series S does not run the collection at 4K; its documented resolution is 1080p. The store listing also identifies 4K at 120 FPS and improved split-screen as Series X-only, while listing 1080p at 120 FPS for Series S.

How the 120 Hz setting interacts with FOV
The field-of-view slider ranges from 70 to 120 degrees, but its availability depends on the console’s output refresh rate. At 60 Hz, you can adjust FOV; at 120 Hz, the setting is locked to its default. So the choice is not simply “higher refresh rate plus wider view”: use 60 Hz if changing FOV matters more to you, or 120 Hz if you prefer the higher-refresh mode and are comfortable with default FOV.
What split-screen supports
Series X and Series S support 60 or 120 Hz in single-player and two-player split-screen, at their respective resolutions. Four-player split-screen runs at 60 FPS, so do not expect that mode to match the 120 Hz option. Xbox’s announcement described split-screen as improved, and the store specifies that improved split-screen is available only on Series X.

A dated Halo: Combat Evolved issue report
Halo Support’s known-issues section is explicitly dated to build 1.1955.0.0 on November 17, 2020. It reported that Halo: Combat Evolved campaign with Anniversary graphics on Series X at 4K/120 Hz could show noticeable frame-rate drops or tearing. The article suggested VRR might reduce the impact, or using 60 Hz for a smoother experience if VRR was unavailable. This is a historical report for that build, not confirmation that the issue remains in the current version.
Which version of the collection is available?
Xbox lists Halo: The Master Chief Collection as a six-game integrated experience for Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, and Windows 10/11, with a listed release date of December 3, 2019.
