Its strongest appeal is the variety and surprise created by that structure; whether it works for you depends in part on how much you enjoy the fighting between card-driven encounters.
Is Hand of Fate 2 worth it?
It is a good fit if you want an unusual fantasy adventure shaped by cards, quest choices, and replay-driven progression. Review excerpts reproduced on Steam praise its quest variety and distinctive blend of cards and action. The main reservation is combat: a Steam-hosted curator review by Game Pad Ink calls it bland, even while praising the quest design and gameplay tweaks.
Steam’s retrieved listing labeled the game “Very Positive,” with 83% of 2,063 English-language reviews positive at the time it was retrieved in 2026. That is a changing, platform-specific snapshot, not a permanent or universal review score. Steam also reproduces favorable excerpts from Rock Paper Shotgun, GameWatcher, and Finder, but those are attributed reviewers’ opinions rather than an independent assessment by Steam.
How does Hand of Fate 2 gameplay work?
The game combines a card-based fantasy adventure with real-time action. You unlock cards and build an adventure; the resulting encounters and challenges form the journey, while combat plays out directly rather than as a card game. The Steam description presents it as a “living boardgame.”

Cards, quests, and uncertainty
The card structure gives the adventure its sense of variation: the journey is assembled from cards, and outcomes can bring surprises as well as setbacks. The reviews highlighted on Steam particularly praise the variety of the quests and challenges. That design is a strength if you like uncertainty and progression across repeated attempts; it may be less appealing if you want every encounter to follow a fixed, predictable sequence.
Combat and companions
Fights are real-time, making action combat a substantial part of the experience rather than a decorative layer on top of the card system. The reception excerpted on Steam is mixed on this point: Game Pad Ink criticizes the combat as bland, while still finding the overall combination and quest variety worthwhile.

According to developer Defiant Development, companions can support you in combat, provide minigame perks, and influence story events. Their role therefore extends beyond simply adding another fighter to a battle.
Is Hand of Fate 2 better than the first game?
The reviews reproduced on Steam generally frame the sequel as an improvement, especially in its challenges and quest design. Rock Paper Shotgun described it as bigger and better than its predecessor in nearly every respect, while GameWatcher praised the diverse new challenges and world-building. Finder likewise called the adventure grander and more fulfilling than the original.

Those are individual review judgments, not a measured comparison across players. The clearest practical distinction in the available descriptions is the sequel’s emphasis on varied quests and a refined version of the card-and-action concept. If combat quality is your deciding factor, the favorable comparisons do not erase the curator criticism of the fighting.

Steam lists Hand of Fate 2 as a single-player game developed and published by Defiant Development, with a release date of November 7, 2017. Its listing includes the base game, a soundtrack, and three DLC packs. The store currently marks it Steam Deck Verified and warns that it is not compatible with macOS 10.15 Catalina or later.
