You do not need to have played the original Hades or know Greek mythology to begin. This guide explains what to expect, how to think about continuing progression, and what to check before choosing a platform or moving a save.
What is Hades II?
Developed and published by Supergiant Games, Hades II follows Melinoë, a witch and Underworld deity, in a conflict with Chronos. Supergiant describes the game as a single-player roguelike dungeon crawler. Its story unfolds through both setbacks and accomplishments, so an attempt that ends before reaching your goal can still move the narrative forward.

Returning players will find connections to the first Hades, but prior knowledge is not a requirement. Supergiant says Melinoë, like Zagreus, is based on an ancient Underworld deity thought to be related to Hades. The game also draws on Greek myth, but you can follow its story without studying the mythology first.
How should a beginner approach Hades II?
Treat each attempt as part of a longer story
A failed attempt is not necessarily lost progress: the game’s narrative is designed to unfold through setbacks as well as accomplishments. Focus on learning the game and seeing what changes after an attempt, rather than treating every run as a pass-or-fail test.

Separate general guidance from version-specific tactics
Advice about a particular weapon, boon combination, boss tactic, or unlock condition can depend on the current game version and what your save has unlocked. Supergiant’s official FAQ and v1.0 announcement establish the game’s broad design and launch state, but do not establish a definitive best build, weapon ranking, or step-by-step route. Treat rankings as player opinion unless they are supported by current, version-specific evidence.
Use unlock guides for the exact point where you are stuck
When looking up how to unlock something or how to beat a particular encounter, match the advice to your current progress and game version. Check that a guide identifies the relevant prerequisite and explains what to do next; a general recommendation may not apply to a save that has not reached the same point.
