Aetherdrift’s ten two-color archetypes are useful signals for what a deck can do—not lanes you must force. In Draft, use them to recognize synergies while staying open to what your seat supplies. In Sealed, build around the strongest threats and support in your actual pool. The key plans range from speed-based aggression to artifact value, graveyard recursion, and exhaust-driven ramp.

How to use the archetype guide

Wizards presents one intended archetype for each color pair. Those descriptions help you see how a collection of cards can work together, but they are not decklists or guarantees that every card in a pair belongs in the same strategy. In Draft, follow the cards available to your seat; in Sealed, evaluate your pool before choosing colors. A deck’s curve, removal, creatures, and functional synergy matter more than matching a label.

The pair names below use the usual color initials: W (white), U (blue), B (black), R (red), and G (green). Wizards’ Prerelease guide describes how the archetypes play, while Mark Rosewater’s design article explains the intended mechanics behind them.

What each Aetherdrift color pair does

White-blue (WU): artifact value and control

Build an artifact board with artifact creatures and Vehicles, then use synergies that reward or enable those artifacts. This is the slower, more controlling artifact plan: develop your board, accrue value, and use artifact payoffs to take over longer games.

Blue-black (UB): artifact stall and drain

Use artifacts such as Robots, Toys, and Thopters to clog the battlefield, then steadily drain the opponent and finish with life-loss payoffs. This plan is less about winning a quick race than making combat difficult while incremental damage adds up.

Black-red (BR): max-speed aggro

Curve out with inexpensive creatures and deal damage on successive turns to build speed. Once you reach max speed, speed-dependent bonuses improve your attacks. The plan rewards early pressure and the ability to keep the opponent losing life on your turn.

Red-green (RG): exhaust midrange

Use efficient exhaust abilities to gain value over time and make creatures larger or enable powerful one-time plays. Exhaust abilities can only be activated once for a given permanent object, so plan around the value of each activation rather than treating it as a repeatable ability. Rosewater describes this as a midrange deck that uses exhaust to upgrade its creatures to impressive size.

Green-white (GW): Vehicles and Mounts midrange

Play Vehicles and Mounts, then crew or saddle them with a sufficient creature base. Support effects help preserve or improve your board as you attack. Since these artifacts and creatures rely on other creatures to activate their combat abilities, the deck needs enough bodies as well as the payoffs.

White-black (WB): max-speed attrition

Use sacrifice and life-drain interactions to enable payoffs and clear a path through the opponent’s board. Life loss during your turn can help build speed, so this archetype can reach speed bonuses without relying only on conventional attacks.

  • COLLECT ALT-BORDER CARDS—Turbo charge your collection with a grand total of 6 alternate-border cards in every Aetherdrift Collector Booster

Blue-red (UR): discard aggro

Combine cycling and other discard effects with cards that reward cycling or a card being discarded, while keeping pressure on the opponent. Cycling can be activated at instant speed, so you can decide when to trade a card for a draw while still enabling discard synergies.

Black-green (BG): graveyard value

Put valuable creatures or Vehicles into the graveyard through discard or mill effects, then reanimate them. The plan turns cards that might otherwise be difficult to use into targets for a reanimation engine.

Red-white (RW): Vehicles and Mounts aggro

Combine red’s aggression with white’s token production. Smaller Vehicles help start attacks early, while payoffs can sustain pressure. As with the green-white plan, the deck needs creatures to crew Vehicles and support its Mounts.

Green-blue (GU): exhaust ramp

Use mana-producing artifacts and lands to accelerate into expensive or multiple exhaust activations. Larger threats and token-producing payoffs then convert that mana advantage into a board capable of closing the game.

Mechanics that determine whether a plan works

Speed and “start your engines!”

The first time in a game you control a permanent with “start your engines!”, your speed becomes 1. After that, when an opponent loses life during your turn, your speed can increase by 1, at most once per turn and only while your speed is below 4. Speed 4 is max speed. Cards may reward your current speed or gain an ability at max speed. That makes reliable early damage valuable to speed decks, but the once-per-turn increase means one burst of multiple damage events does not raise speed several times. See Wizards’ mechanics article and release notes.

Exhaust

An exhaust ability is an activated ability that can be used only once for that permanent object. If the permanent leaves the battlefield and returns, it is a new object and can use its exhaust ability again. Red-green and green-blue both use exhaust, but for different ends: creature upgrades and efficient value in RG, acceleration into powerful activations in GU. The rules details are in the official mechanics article.

Vehicles, crew, Mounts, and saddle

A Vehicle begins as an artifact. Its crew ability taps other creatures whose total power meets or exceeds its crew value; it becomes an artifact creature until end of turn. A Vehicle cannot crew itself, though an animated Vehicle can crew another Vehicle. Saddle works similarly: at sorcery timing, tap other creatures with combined power at least the saddle value; when the ability resolves, the Mount becomes saddled until end of turn and receives the payoff printed on that card. These costs make creature count and board development essential to both vehicle archetypes. Rules are explained in Wizards’ mechanics article.

Cycling and discard

Cycling lets you pay a card’s cycling cost, discard it, and draw a card. Some cards trigger when cycled or when another card is discarded, making cycling a way to find action while advancing blue-red synergies. It can also help smooth a Vehicle-heavy draw by exchanging a card that is awkward in the moment for a new one, as discussed in the design article.

How to apply the archetypes in Draft

  • Use the pair plan as a signal, not a commitment. A card that supports an archetype is most useful when the rest of your picks can support its plan. Do not assume that seeing one payoff means the lane is open.
  • Prioritize functional decks. Early plays, removal, a usable curve, and enough creatures to crew or saddle often matter more than collecting every synergy piece.
  • Check the costs behind the payoff. A Vehicle needs crew power from other creatures; a Mount needs bodies to saddle; an exhaust card offers one activation per permanent object. Draft support along with the flashy card.
  • Keep your deck’s actual path to victory in view. Speed decks need opportunities to deal damage on your turn; artifact-drain decks need ways to stall and trigger value; graveyard decks need both suitable cards to discard or mill and ways to bring them back.

How to build an Aetherdrift Sealed deck

Sealed starts with the cards you opened, not an assumed archetype. Aetherdrift Prerelease Sealed uses a 40-card deck built from the pool and any number of basic lands. Wizards describes a Prerelease Pack as containing six Aetherdrift Play Boosters, a traditional-foil year-stamped rare or mythic rare, a max-speed helper card, a deck box, and a spindown die; see the Prerelease guide.

Compare your colors and possible plans across these practical factors before settling on a build:

  • COLLECT THE COOLEST AETHERDRIFT CARDS—Get 2 Collector Boosters for a shortcut to the coolest cards in the set; each pack is full of Rare and/or Mythic cards, shiny foil cards, and special alt-art, alt-frame cards
  • 6 BOOSTERS FOR PLAYING WITH FRIENDS—Perfect for building decks, playing Limited games, and tons of fun to open, this Finish Line Bundle includes 6 Play Boosters, with a possibility of multiple Rares and at least 1 shining foil card in every pack
  • 3 EXTENDED-ART CARDS—Soup up your decks with 3 Extended-Art cards featuring alternate art exclusive to the Finish Line Bundle
  • 2 FOIL BOX TOPPER CARDS—A tantalizing prize for a high-stakes match, in every Finish Line Bundle you’ll score a Box Topper containing 2 cards gleaming with a brand new foil treatment
  • Threats: Which colors contain the strongest creatures and other ways to win? Build around cards you can realistically cast and support.
  • Removal and interaction: Count reliable answers, not just cards that look powerful. Wizards notes that white and black can destroy creatures; blue can counter spells or return permanents; red and green lean more on damage-based removal, which can still answer many Vehicles.
  • Curve and early plays: Can the deck develop consistently, or does it have too many expensive cards and too few useful early turns? Relevant early plays also help pressure opponents in speed-oriented builds.
  • Creature count and support: If you have Vehicles or Mounts, check whether enough creatures can crew and saddle them without leaving the board empty.
  • Actual synergy pieces: A nominal archetype is not enough. Confirm you have the enablers and payoffs together—for example, discard triggers with ways to discard, or graveyard targets with reanimation.

These are pool-building checks, not a command to force one of the ten Draft archetypes. A coherent two-color deck with threats, interaction, and a functional curve is usually a better starting point than a more ambitious plan whose essential pieces are missing.

What Premier Draft results say—and what they do not

The following 17Lands Premier Draft dashboard snapshot, retrieved October 8, 2026, reports game records for two-color decks. The live dashboard can change. These aggregate results describe observed games in that data view; they do not establish that a color pair causes a higher win rate, predict an individual seat, or tell you what to build from a Sealed pool.

Color pair Games Win rate
Green-blue (GU) 130,607 56.5%
Black-green (BG) 160,043 56.4%
Green-white (GW) 72,123 56.2%
White-black (WB) 50,245 55.6%
Black-red (BR) 77,579 55.2%
Red-green (RG) 79,901 55.1%
Blue-black (UB) 106,650 54.6%
White-blue (WU) 66,308 54.2%
Blue-red (UR) 86,137 53.7%
Red-white (RW) 42,443 52.0%

In this snapshot, green-blue, black-green, and green-white led the two-color table, while red-white was lowest. Use that as context when evaluating the format, not as a reason to force a pair: seat, pool, pilot, and draft context still matter. The full view is 17Lands’ Aetherdrift Premier Draft deck-color data.

Wizards’ State of Design 2025 retrospective adds a different kind of context: it reports that players enjoyed Vehicles as a set focus and found “start your engines!” and speed gave Limited a distinctive focus, while also reporting criticism of the racing theme. That is a summary of player feedback, not a numerical survey or a ranking of archetypes.
