Arrowhead turned Helldivers 2’s 2024 Steam review backlash into an in-game cape called Pillars of Freedom, released in June 2025. Its design recalls the sharp change in the game’s review graph during the dispute over Sony’s proposed PlayStation Network account requirement for PC players.
Did Helldivers 2 release the review-graph cape?
Yes. The idea began in May 2024, when Arrowhead CEO Johan Pilestedt shared a community proposal for a cape modeled on the game’s Steam review graph. In June 2025, Arrowhead released it as Pillars of Freedom. GameSpot reported it was free for players, and the official Helldivers account said it would appear in Super Destroyer Armories as the rollout completed. PC Gamer’s release report and GameSpot’s report cover the release.
The official account described it as a commemorative cape awarded “in honor of their unquestioning commitment to the defense of Managed Democracy,” in wording reproduced by both outlets. This is a digital cosmetic in the game, not a physical merchandise item.
Why was the cape based on a review graph?
In May 2024, a community member suggested turning Helldivers 2’s review history into a cape design. The graph’s earlier positive peaks gave way to a sudden negative drop, making it a recognizable image of the backlash. PC Gamer reported on Pilestedt sharing the proposal while Arrowhead was discussing a possible name.

The dispute followed Sony’s attempt to require PC players to link a PlayStation Network account, alongside regional availability restrictions that affected access. PC Gamer’s 2025 retrospective reported that the campaign produced over 200,000 negative Steam reviews; that is the outlet’s reported figure, not an independently audited count. The cape’s motif refers to that episode, rather than to a change in the game’s mechanics.
How does Steam define a review bomb?
Valve’s Steamworks review documentation defines a review bomb as “when a large amount of players use reviews to voice their unhappiness, lower a review score and provoke a response.” That is a platform definition, not a judgment that every review in a given campaign is off-topic.

Steam distinguishes off-topic review bombs from criticism about a product. Its guidance says customer reviews can address the game itself, its value proposition, business practices, or the experience of being part of the community. It advises developers to contact Partner Support when an unusual volume and shift in review sentiment affects a score. Valve’s guidance does not establish that it removed the Helldivers 2 reviews, so the cape story should not be taken as evidence that it did.
