Progression is not simply a kill race: the developers’ published system awards experience across combat, attacking, defending, and support contributions, alongside match-time and completion bonuses.
How role leveling works
Hell Let Loose has two progression tracks: Career Level, which reflects your overall player progression, and Role Level, which advances separately for each role. The developers’ 2019 progression briefing says role progression uses the same broad score framework as career progression, but takes longer. It describes score from combat, attack, defence, and support actions—not just kills.

The same 2019 briefing describes match XP as a combination of personal score added to unit score, time played, a match-completion multiplier, and post-match commendations. Its published example awards 5 XP per minute, up to 450 XP in a full 90-minute battle; gives a 50% victory multiplier and a 25% defeat multiplier; and says each commendation adds 10% of the selected player’s total score, with up to five commendations received. These are figures from the original published progression design, not a verified current-build XP table. Check the live game for current values.
The developers explicitly advised players to settle in, communicate with their unit, and try to win rather than grind levels. Their briefing also says leaving mid-match forfeits end-of-round bonuses. So, when practical, stay for the full match and focus on useful actions that help your team.

- Fight in epic 50 vs 50 multiplayer battles.
- 9 maps with more added frequently - land at Omaha Beach, fight through Carentan and into the frozen forests of Foy before climbing Hill 400.
- Never fight the same battle twice - 99 capture point variations per map, means thousands of potential battles.
- Play and master one or many of 14 unique roles, including: Officer, Medic, Machinegunner, Commander, Crewman, Sniper and more.
- Constantly updated with new maps, weapons, features and fixes.
Best leveling approach for each role
There is no verified current per-action XP chart that establishes a universally fastest activity for every role. The guidance below focuses on role-appropriate contributions the published scoring system supports; treat it as practical gameplay advice, not a promise of a specific XP payout.
Officer
Keep the squad organized, communicate useful information, and place or maintain Outposts and Garrisons where they help the team. The developers name Outposts and Garrisons among support-scoring examples. Use them to help your squad deploy and work toward objectives, not simply to chase a placement count.
Medic
Stay close enough to support teammates and revive them when it is safe to do so. The progression briefing specifically uses rescuing teammates as an example of valuable class contribution and says the system is intended not to disadvantage medic play compared with kill-heavy roles.

Rifleman
Make your ammunition useful to teammates and take part in capturing or defending zones. The developers cite ammo-box use by teammates and zone capture as examples of score-bearing contribution. Coordinate with your squad so your supplies are available where they can be used.

Coordinate with the squad and provide useful supplies or ammunition when the situation calls for them. Support actions are part of the published scoring categories, but the briefing does not provide a current XP amount for a particular supply action.
Engineer
Build or maintain useful team infrastructure when it suits the map and your team’s needs. The official description includes support actions broadly, but does not establish a current formula for nodes or guarantee a particular XP reward. Avoid treating construction as an automatic leveling shortcut.

Anti-Tank and vehicle crews
Look for engagements that help your team’s objectives and prioritize worthwhile vehicle threats. Vehicle destruction falls under combat scoring in the published framework, but the briefing does not give a current XP value per vehicle. For armor roles, effective coordination and useful engagements matter more than chasing a specific unverified payout.
Machine Gunner, Assault, Automatic Rifleman, Recon, and Commander
Contribute where the role is useful: support an attack, hold a defensive position, assist the squad, or take a combat opportunity that serves the objective. The published briefing does not give individual current formulas for these roles, so there is no substantiated class-specific XP rate to recommend.

- Stay through the match when you can. The published progression design includes time played and end-of-match bonuses; leaving early forfeits those completion bonuses according to the developers’ briefing.
- Play for the objective. Capturing, defending, supporting teammates, and fighting useful engagements align with the score categories described by the developers.
- Coordinate with your unit. A role’s contribution is more useful when the squad can act on it—whether that means deploying from an Outpost, using ammunition, receiving a revive, or pushing an objective together.
- Try to win, but don’t abandon a useful role to chase kills. The 2019 briefing describes a larger completion multiplier for victory than defeat, while still assigning a completion bonus to losses.
- Use commendations to recognize teamwork. The original design gives a recipient a post-match boost, capped at five commendations received. The exact current value should be checked in-game.
What role loadout levels unlock
The official loadout-system briefing from 2019 describes three additional loadout unlocks at Role Levels 3, 6, and 9, alongside the Standard Issue loadout. It presents loadouts as variations that broaden how a role can be played, not as a straight power increase. Because this information is historical and later updates can change availability, confirm unlocks in the current role and faction UI.

- Fight in epic 50 vs 50 multiplayer battles.
- Play as the North Vietnamese Army or the US Armed Forces.
- Immersive jungle warfare recreates the real-world intensity of the battle.
- 6 distinct game modes: Offensive, Warfare and 4 alternative new game modes.
- 6 large-scale maps – all with lighting and weather variants and extreme terrain.
Choose a loadout for the job, map, expected engagement, and squad need rather than assuming a higher-level option is always stronger. For example, a specialized close-range option may suit one situation while a longer-range or support-oriented kit is more useful in another.
Availability can also depend on updates and faction. The publisher’s game page lists Update 21 among recent updates, while Dev Brief #220, published September 1, 2026, previews planned additions including a level 6 US Rifleman option, a level 8 Soviet Support option, and new level 8 Rifleman and Engineer variants. A preview does not establish that every listed loadout is live in every current build; check the in-game menu for your faction.
How to choose what to level next
- Pick a role whose useful actions you can perform consistently. If you naturally support teammates, a support-oriented role can fit; if you prefer direct combat, contribute through fights that help the squad and objective.
- Check what your squad needs. Filling a practical gap can make your play more valuable than switching roles solely for a supposed XP trick.
- Stay with the role long enough to learn its job. Role familiarity helps you contribute reliably across a match, which is more sound than relying on unverified grind recipes.
- Review the live loadout screen at levels 3, 6, and 9. Those are the unlock milestones in the 2019 design briefing; use the current UI as the authority for what is available now.
Neither the published progression briefing nor the cited update materials establish a current per-action XP table or confirm claims that switching roles changes how construction or node XP is credited. Treat exact “fastest leveling” recipes cautiously unless confirmed by current patch documentation or the live game.
