In a Scottish weapons context, “Highland axe” most plausibly refers to the Lochaber axe: a long-handled staff weapon associated with the West Highlands. The name is not unambiguous, however, and Scotland’s Highland archaeological record also includes much older stone and metal axes.

What is a Lochaber axe?

The Lochaber axe was a long-handled weapon used by Highland foot soldiers. The West Highland Museum describes its design as a form of halberd. A surviving example recorded by Historic Environment Scotland has a broad blade and a hook, and is dated to the 1500s–1700s; the record says this type of Scottish staff weapon is thought to have originated in the West Highlands. “Highland axe” is a useful broad description, not a definitive historical name for one standard design. The Lochaber axe is the strongest match when the phrase means a Scottish long-handled battle weapon. In archaeological contexts, it can instead point to much older axes found in the region.

When did Highland soldiers use it?

The West Highland Museum reports the weapon’s first record around 1570, when Clan Cameron carried it at the Battle of Bun Garbhain against Clan Mackintosh. This is a reported early record, not a claim that every surviving Lochaber axe dates from that year. Historic Environment Scotland assigns one recorded example a broader date of the 1500s–1700s.

Armory Replicas™ Medieval Lochaber Axe Head High Carbon Steel Crescent Blade Polearm Replica
  • Hand-forged lochaber axe head crafted from high carbon steel for durability and historical accuracy.
  • Massive 20-inch crescent-style blade with a cleaver profile and solid construction for an authentic medieval appearance.
  • Dual welded sockets on the blade spine allow secure mounting to a strong wooden shaft of your choice
  • Special heat treatment creates a blackened, antiqued finish inspired by 15th-century designs
  • Hefty build weighing approximately 4 lbs; mounting shaft is not included and must be purchased separately

The weapon also had a later ceremonial association. The West Highland Museum says a pair of Lochaber axes from Taymouth Castle was made for Queen Victoria’s visit there in 1842. Those axes belong to a ceremonial context and should not be confused with the earlier battlefield use.

What did a Lochaber axe look like?

There was no single universal size established by these records. Historic Environment Scotland describes a broad blade and hook on its recorded example. The Royal Collection Trust catalogues a set of Lochaber axes or halberds with wooden shafts and metal heads, measuring 173 cm overall, with blades measuring 48 × 16 cm. Those dimensions belong to that catalogued set, not to every Lochaber axe. Royal Collection Trust: Lochaber axes

How does it differ from older Highland axes?

The Lochaber axe is a staff weapon associated with Highland foot soldiers from the early modern period. The West Highland Museum’s archaeological account describes a much longer history: polished stone axes from the Neolithic period and the later spread of metal axes. These archaeological tools and objects should not be treated as the same weapon as the Lochaber axe simply because both are axes associated with the Highlands. Are Lochaber axe replicas available?

Future Museum records a Lochaber axe replica in the Dean Castle arms-and-armour collection and identifies Thomas Yeudall as its maker. That collection record confirms the replica’s existence; it does not establish whether it is currently for sale, in stock, or suitable for reenactment. Future Museum: Lochaber axe replica
