The Super Mario Bros. Movie leads the available worldwide box-office chart for films based on games, with The Numbers listing $1,359,226,275. The top two have since changed: Universal said The Super Mario Galaxy Movie passed $1 billion and became the second-highest-grossing video-game adaptation on June 8, 2026. The figures below distinguish that dated milestone from the older chart’s cumulative totals.
What is the highest-grossing video game movie?
The Super Mario Bros. Movie (2023) is the leader in The Numbers’ “Based on Game” worldwide chart, which lists its cumulative gross at $1,359,226,275. That is a nominal-dollar chart figure, not an inflation-adjusted total or a live audited tally. The Numbers’ chart reports domestic and international grosses separately as well.
Guinness World Records also names it the highest-grossing movie based on a videogame, but its record entry gives a measurement date of February 19, 2025 and warns that records may change. That dated record should not be confused with a current box-office feed.
How the leading films compare
The Numbers’ available “Based on Game” chart was accessed in 2026 and lists the following worldwide totals. Universal’s June 8, 2026 announcement supplies the newer position for The Super Mario Galaxy Movie; its milestone is not a final lifetime total.
| Film | Worldwide box office | Basis |
|---|---|---|
| The Super Mario Bros. Movie (2023) | $1,359,226,275 | The Numbers chart, accessed 2026 |
| The Super Mario Galaxy Movie (2026) | More than $1 billion | Universal milestone reported June 8, 2026, during its tenth weekend; Universal said it ranked second among video-game adaptations |
| A Minecraft Movie (2025) | $958,236,520 | The Numbers chart, accessed 2026 |
| Sonic the Hedgehog 3 (2024) | $489,615,622 | The Numbers chart, accessed 2026 |
| Warcraft (2016) | $438,899,824 | The Numbers chart, accessed 2026 |
| Pokémon: Detective Pikachu (2019) | $433,088,346 | The Numbers chart, accessed 2026 |
| Rampage (2018) | $428,128,233 | The Numbers chart, accessed 2026 |
| Uncharted (2022) | $407,141,258 | The Numbers chart, accessed 2026 |
| Sonic the Hedgehog 2 (2022) | $403,824,597 | The Numbers chart, accessed 2026 |
The chart snapshot does not include The Super Mario Galaxy Movie. Universal’s report places it second as of its June 8 milestone, but the available figures do not establish a refreshed, exhaustive ranking below second place. The chart categorizes films as “Based on Game,” a broad category that includes both animation and live action; it is not a separate ranking of only direct or especially faithful adaptations.
Worldwide gross is not domestic gross
Worldwide totals combine domestic and international box office, so a film’s global rank can tell a different story from its domestic performance. In The Numbers’ chart, Warcraft has a $438,899,824 worldwide total, of which $391,534,534 is international and $47,365,290 domestic. Those regional figures use the same chart snapshot as the worldwide total.

- The Help (Three-Disc Combo: Blu-ray/DVD + Digital Copy)
For The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, Universal’s June 8, 2026 milestone report gives a $429.6 million domestic and $577.5 million international split, totaling just over $1 billion by the studio’s description. These were milestone figures in the film’s tenth weekend, not an asserted final gross.
Why Minecraft opening-weekend figures differ
A Minecraft Movie has two often-compared numbers that measure different things. The Numbers lists $958,236,520 as its cumulative worldwide gross in the chart snapshot accessed in 2026. The Associated Press reported an estimated $301 million global opening in April 2025—$157 million domestic and $144 million internationally. An opening weekend is not a lifetime total, so the figures are not contradictory.

In the AP report, Comscore senior media analyst Paul Dergarabedian said, “Video games were once a genre that had very mixed results at the box office, but the code has finally been cracked.” That is an attributed industry observation, not proof of a single cause for the success of game adaptations.
What this ranking does—and does not—measure
- Worldwide cumulative box office: The chart compares global totals, not opening weekends or domestic-only grosses.
- Nominal dollars: The Numbers’ listed figures are not presented as inflation-adjusted amounts.
- A defined category: The ranking follows The Numbers’ “Based on Game” classification rather than a narrower independently defined test of adaptation fidelity.
- A dated snapshot: The chart’s detailed totals are useful for comparison, but its omission of the 2026 sequel means the ranking cannot be treated as a complete live list.
Where to watch the top-ranked film
For viewers who want a physical edition of the chart leader, Universal lists The Super Mario Bros. Movie in 4K Ultra HD + Blu-ray + Digital, Blu-ray + DVD + Digital, and DVD formats on its official home-media page.
