For a first-playthrough story progression, Honglan stands out as a reported difficulty spike; Liu Cheng’en and Bo Sorcerer are other notable contenders. Optional and late-game fights can change the order, and New Game+ raises the challenge further.
How this ranking judges difficulty
This is an editorial ranking of likely contenders, not a measured comparison of every boss. It focuses on first-playthrough difficulty and weighs attack pressure, opportunities to recover or punish, how much a player must learn, and where an encounter falls in progression. A fight that feels punishing before a character is well developed may feel different later, and player builds and habits matter.
There is no controlled, comparable boss-difficulty dataset behind these picks. Player discussions identify tough encounters but reflect individual experiences, not a representative sample. The ranking below therefore gives a practical shortlist and explains why each fight belongs in it, rather than claiming a definitive universal order.
The hardest boss contenders
1. Commander Honglan
Honglan is the strongest pick for a first-run difficulty wall. Players have described a spike around this encounter and have asked which fights after Honglan are most frustrating. Those reports make her a prominent contender, though they do not establish that she is objectively harder than every other boss.

Her placement also reflects progression: a difficult encounter encountered before a player has fully settled into the game’s combat can feel more demanding than a later fight faced with a developed character and greater familiarity.
2. Liu Cheng’en
Liu Cheng’en is named alongside Honglan and Bo Sorcerer in a player discussion about tough bosses. That makes him a reasonable contender, but the discussion does not establish a precise order or a universal reason he is harder for everyone. Treat this placement as an editorial assessment, not a measured result.

3. Bo Sorcerer
Bo Sorcerer appears in the same community discussion of difficult encounters. The post emphasizes that tactics matter, which is a useful reminder that a fight’s difficulty can depend on how a player approaches it. Available reports do not support a more exact comparison with Liu Cheng’en.
Optional and late-game bosses
Optional chapter fights and late-game encounters deserve a place in any broad discussion of the hardest bosses, but they are not directly comparable to a first-run progression wall. One player discussion argues that optional chapter bosses can be tougher than the mandatory story end boss. That is an individual view, not a consensus, but it shows why a list should say whether it includes missable fights.

- A soulslike, action RPG set in the land of Shu during the dark and tumultuous late Ming Dynasty, plagued with warring factions and a mysterious illness spawning monstrous creatures.
- WUCHANG: Fallen Feathers Base Game, 4 Costumes:- Tiger of Fortune Costume - Draconic Resurgence Costume - Soul Ritual Robe Costume - Overlord’s Regalia Costume, 4 Weapons: - Watcher’s Gaze (Sword) - Dragoncoil Lance (Spear) - Eternal Sovereignty (Dual Blades) - Moonlight Dragon (Sword), 2 Skill Upgrade Items
The story end boss
Do not assume the final story encounter must be the hardest. Player accounts differ, and at least one discussion explicitly contrasts optional chapter bosses with the story end boss. The end boss may be a personal peak for some players, but the available evidence does not justify placing it above every optional or earlier contender.
Why the ranking changes by playthrough
PowerPyx’s all-boss guide says subsequent New Game+ playthroughs increase difficulty. A first-run ranking should not be read as a ranking for New Game+: the same encounter can pose a greater challenge on a later cycle, while the player may also bring more experience and a different build.
Rank #4
- A soulslike, action RPG set in the land of Shu during the dark and tumultuous late Ming Dynasty, plagued with warring factions and a mysterious illness spawning monstrous creatures.
- Battle against grotesque abominations, drawing on ancient lore to challenge the creeping darkness that threatens the humanity that remains.
Optionality matters too. A story-only route and a completionist run expose players to different encounters. A list that omits optional bosses may answer “Which fight blocks story progress?” but not “Which boss can be toughest in the whole game?”
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What makes the fights feel demanding
GamesRadar’s reviewer describes finding few safe openings after evading boss combinations. That is one reviewer’s combat experience, not an objective measure for every fight. It does, however, point to a common source of pressure in action combat: surviving an attack sequence is only part of the challenge if there is little time afterward to recover or retaliate.
Player discussions also describe high damage and relentless attacks, and mention dodging through certain attacks and using Aurum Feather Force. These are community tips rather than official guidance, and the reports do not establish one tactic as a reliable answer for a particular boss or current patch.
How to approach a boss that feels like a wall
- Separate survival from punishment. First learn which parts of a sequence you can evade consistently; then look for a safe opportunity to attack rather than forcing damage after every dodge.
- Reassess your approach when openings are scarce. GamesRadar’s reviewer described using a longsword with Blink Kick to close distance and stagger, then retreating and repeating. This is one reviewer’s reported strategy, not a tested recommendation for every boss or build.
- Use encounter-specific guidance carefully. PowerPyx provides boss locations and tactics, but tactics can be patch-sensitive. Check the guide’s update context before relying on a detail that depends on a particular version.
- Keep the source of advice in view. Community posts can surface useful ideas, but they are individual experiences rather than official or broadly verified instructions.
Where to find the game’s boss context
Xbox Wire describes WUCHANG: Fallen Feathers as a Soulslike action RPG in a dark reimagining of Ming Dynasty China, with bosses as central encounters. The PlayStation listing presents it as a PS5 game and characterizes its boss battles as challenging and high-pressure. The official game website describes the world of Shu and the phenomenon called Feathering.
