Harry Potter: Magic Awakened servers in the Americas, Europe and Oceania closed on October 29, 2024. The app was removed from those regions’ app stores and in-game purchases ended on August 26, 2024. The shutdown affected those territories, not every version of the game.
Which Harry Potter game shut down?
The affected title was Harry Potter: Magic Awakened, a free-to-play collectible-card role-playing game for iOS and Android, set in the Wizarding World. Its gameplay included spell-card duels, Hogwarts activities and trips to the Forbidden Forest, presented in a picture-book visual style. Wizarding World’s game feature describes those elements.
Warner Bros. Games and NetEase announced its global rollout on June 27, 2023. NetEase had previously said that the game released in Chinese Mainland, Hong Kong, Macau and Taiwan in September 2021, so June 2023 was not its first release everywhere. When did service end, and where?
The Harry Potter: Magic Awakened Team announced: “The time has come for Harry Potter: Magic Awakened to officially close its servers in the Americas, Europe and Oceania territories on October 29, 2024.” The closure notice said service would continue in Chinese Mainland, Hong Kong, Macau, Taiwan and other select territories in Asia and the Middle East and North Africa (MENA). Was it really shut down after only one year?
“Only one year” is an imprecise description of the global rollout. The announced worldwide rollout began June 27, 2023, and the affected regional servers closed October 29, 2024—about 16 months later. The earlier September 2021 release in Chinese Mainland, Hong Kong, Macau and Taiwan makes a single launch-to-shutdown duration inaccurate for every territory.
What happened to players’ accounts and purchases?
The closure FAQ said server transfers would not be possible. After store removal, players in the affected territories who deleted the app or changed phones could not redownload it from their regional stores. Past purchases would not be refunded. Why did the game close?
The official closure announcement does not give a reason for the decision. It says the game had been enjoyed by “millions of fans,” but provides no count, measurement method or year-specific audience figure. The available announcement therefore does not establish a commercial-performance explanation or another specific cause.
