The role itself was already public: CEO Johan Pilestedt said months earlier that an employee named Joel held the Game Master title and helped shape the game’s Galactic War.
What was revealed—and what wasn’t
On 1 August 2024, Arrowhead posted a staged, tongue-in-cheek video featuring a figure in a room marked “J.O.E.L.” GamesRadar described the clip as a sighting of the mysterious Game Master. Its supernatural framing and expansion of Joel’s name into the initials J.O.E.L. are comic conceits, not verified biographical details or a full identity disclosure. GamesRadar’s report on the video describes the figure monitoring a mission and interacting with the Discord community.

The video was not the first public information about the job. In a February 2024 interview, Arrowhead CEO Johan Pilestedt told PC Gamer, “We have an actual person with the job title of Game Master.” He identified the employee as Joel and said the role had “a lot of control over the play experience” through systems the studio was still evolving. PC Gamer’s interview with Pilestedt is the source for that earlier description.
What the Game Master does
Reporting describes the Game Master as influencing the Galactic War’s unfolding campaign: which major orders and daily orders are active, and where enemies attack. Pilestedt compared the approach to tabletop role-playing, where a Game Master guides a shared story in response to players. In Helldivers 2, that idea has to work for a very large online community rather than a small table of players.

Pilestedt put the trade-off plainly: “It’s the same format when you build that for millions of players, it’s just that you can’t get as personal with every individual.” The analogy helps explain the intended storytelling role; it does not mean the video discloses the game’s technical systems, tools, or the Game Master’s precise permissions.
In the 2024 interview, Pilestedt also gave an example of campaign adjustment: “There have been some sudden moments where maybe one planet was too easy or one was too hard and [Joel] had to get up in the middle of the night to give the Automatons a bit of reinforcements so the players don’t take [the planet] too quickly.” That account illustrates the kind of intervention he described at the time; it is not a complete account of how every order or battle is decided.

How player actions fit into the Galactic War
A later qualification came in a February 2026 PC Gamer interview with game director Mikael Eriksson. Discussing the assault on Cyberstan and the Galactic War, Eriksson said: “One of the central points of Helldivers is that we play the game together with the community, and the actions of the community are not known to us and the outcomes are not predetermined.” He also said the studio had tried to make differing outcomes and consequences more obvious through updates. PC Gamer’s February 2026 interview supports describing the campaign as intended to respond to community action, but it does not establish that every individual action changes persistent game state or that every event is improvised.

The cited interviews and reports do not establish who currently performs the Game Master function, whether it remains one person, or whether staffing has changed since the 2024 coverage. They also do not provide a current official role description or technical breakdown. The defensible takeaway is narrower: Arrowhead publicly described an employee named Joel in the role in February 2024, then turned that mystery into a staged joke in August. The footage did not verify Joel’s full identity.
