A phrase reportedly posted by Hideo Kojima in September 2025 has revived the question of whether Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain was unfinished. The available record does not establish that Kojima formally confirmed it: the primary X post could not be accessed, and the phrase’s meaning is disputed.

What did Kojima reportedly say?

An indexed fan discussion links to a September 2025 X post in which Kojima reportedly replied, “Ah, the unfinished masterpiece,” after a fan named Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain as a favorite. Because the post itself was not accessible to verify, the wording should be treated as reported rather than as a confirmed direct quotation. The discussion also shows readers disagreeing about whether the phrase confirmed the game was incomplete or echoed language from an article. The indexed discussion does not resolve that ambiguity.

Does the phrase confirm that MGSV was unfinished?

No. Even if the reported wording is accurate, it is not by itself a clear statement that the shipped game lacked planned content or was formally incomplete. “Unfinished masterpiece” could be read as a wry description of the game, but the evidence available does not establish Kojima’s intended meaning. It would overstate the record to say that he confirmed the game was unfinished.

What did Konami and Kojima say before release?

Konami announced the game as the conclusion to the MGSV experience

In June 2014, Konami described The Phantom Pain as concluding the Metal Gear Solid V experience after the prologue Ground Zeroes. Its announcement highlighted an open world, changing weather and day-night conditions, freedom of movement and transport, and infiltration and stealth. That describes the experience Konami announced; it does not verify that every planned element ultimately shipped. Konami’s announcement

Kojima discussed scale and practical limits

In an interview originally published on February 21, 2014, Kojima said he wanted to devote all his time to a Metal Gear Solid on the scale of Grand Theft Auto, while explaining that the studio had to balance development across projects and Konami’s wider business. He described a structure mixing long and short missions with episodic chapters. Those comments show he was conscious of both ambition and production constraints; they do not establish that the released game was incomplete. Game Informer interview

Konami said the game was on schedule in 2015

On March 20, 2015, Konami said the game would begin releasing on schedule on September 1 in North America, Latin America, and Europe, followed by Japan and Asia on September 2. The notice quoted Kojima saying, “I want to reassure fans that I am 100% involved and will continue working on METAL GEAR SOLID V: THE PHANTOM PAIN; I’m determined to make it the greatest game I’ve directed to date.” This is evidence of Konami’s public position before launch and Kojima’s stated involvement—not proof that no content was cut or that every creative ambition was fulfilled. What did Kojima say at launch about changes and refinement?

In a launch-period report, Kojima said he had been “balancing and tweaking right up until the very end” to make MGS V the best it could be. GameSpot’s report also quoted him explaining that he avoided playing his own games at home because he might spot something he wanted to fix or improve. A second GameSpot report provides additional launch context.

That is evidence of late-stage refinement and a creator’s continuing instinct to revise. It is not the same as evidence that the version released to players was incomplete: wanting to improve a finished game can continue after launch, and the quoted remarks do not identify missing content or an unfinished release.

What can be concluded about the “unfinished” debate?

  • What is reported: Kojima used the phrase “Ah, the unfinished masterpiece” in a September 2025 reply, according to an indexed discussion linking to his X post.
  • What remains uncertain: The primary post was inaccessible, so its wording and context cannot be independently checked here; the phrase’s meaning is disputed.
  • What the older statements add: Konami described the intended scope and schedule, while Kojima spoke about development constraints, episodic structure, and final balancing.
  • What they do not prove: None of those statements establishes that the shipped game was—or was not—missing planned content.

The most defensible answer is that Kojima reportedly called The Phantom Pain an “unfinished masterpiece,” but the phrase does not amount to a verified formal confirmation that the released game was unfinished.
