The ranking is a modeled player-count estimate—not a poll, review score, sales chart, or verdict on which game was best—and its reported platform coverage excludes Nintendo Switch and Switch 2.
What this 2025 games ranking measures
Alinea Analytics describes its list as the “top new 2025 games by players.” HotHardware’s December 21, 2025 summary says the estimates cover Steam, PlayStation, and Xbox, including the Microsoft Store and PC Game Pass. The accessible reporting does not specify the list’s geography, so it should not be labeled a U.S. or worldwide ranking.
The figures are estimates attributed to Alinea Analytics, not independently audited player totals. Alinea links to a public PC and console report, but the accessible material does not explain enough of its methodology for readers to reproduce the estimates. Player count also measures reach, not review quality, sales, revenue, or what critics or editors liked most.
What the reported ranking establishes
| Position or game | Reported figure | What the figure means |
|---|---|---|
| #1: Battlefield 6 | 23.8 million players | HotHardware’s December 21, 2025 account of Alinea Analytics’ list. |
| #15: ARC Raiders | 6.7 million players | HotHardware’s December 21, 2025 account of Alinea Analytics’ list. |
| Skate | 23 million players | Alinea Analytics’ December 19, 2025 newsletter reports this total for 2025. |
| R.E.P.O. | 19.6 million players | Alinea Analytics’ December 19, 2025 newsletter estimate. |
| PEAK | More than 15 million players | Alinea Analytics says this total was reached on Steam alone. |
| EA Sports FC 26 | Fifth in the top-five discussion | Alinea Analytics identifies it as fifth; the accessible newsletter text does not give a player total. |
HotHardware highlights co-op releases R.E.P.O., PEAK, Schedule I, and Split Fiction, as well as the single-player indie games Hollow Knight: Silksong and Clair Obscur: Expedition 33. The accessible HotHardware text does not show every intermediate placement in its top 15, so the missing ranks cannot be filled reliably from the available figures.

Why Battlefield 6 has two different player figures
HotHardware reports 23.8 million players for Battlefield 6 in its account of the ranking. In its December 19, 2025 newsletter, Alinea Analytics separately says the game had more than 26 million players when free-to-play REDSEC is included. Those figures have different stated scopes; they should not be merged or treated as competing measurements of precisely the same thing.
Alinea also says the Battlefield 6 base game had sold over 20 million copies. Copies sold are not the same as players: the player figure includes a broader scope in the later Alinea account, while the sales figure specifically concerns the base game.

Player counts are not sales or revenue
Some related 2025 figures describe commercial performance rather than the player-count ranking. Alinea Analytics reported that Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 had sold over 6.1 million copies, with 57% of those sales via Steam. Neither number is a player estimate.
Alinea’s December 19 newsletter also reported estimated Steam revenue of $17.7 billion year to date, before the final 11 days of 2025; it is not a final calendar-year total. The same newsletter put indie-game revenue at around $4.5 billion, or more than 25% of overall Steam revenue. Its game-specific gross Steam revenue estimates were $151 million for Schedule I, $147 million for R.E.P.O., $87 million for PEAK, $75 million for Hollow Knight: Silksong, and $53 million for Escape from Duckov. These dollar figures are revenue estimates, not player counts or positions in the player ranking.

How to compare this with other “best games” lists
Before comparing a ranking with another year-end list, check what it actually counts and where the data comes from:
- Metric: Is the list based on estimated players, copies sold, revenue, reviews, votes, or editorial judgment?
- Date: When were the figures reported? Totals can change as more people play or buy a game.
- Platforms: Which storefronts and consoles are included? This list’s described coverage leaves out Nintendo Switch and Switch 2.
- Scope: Does a figure include a free-to-play companion or mode, or refer only to a paid base game?
- Method: Is the result a measured platform total, a modeled estimate, or a critic or editor’s selection?
Those distinctions matter here: the reported figures combine platform estimates with different scopes, while the associated coverage also discusses sales and revenue. The list answers which new releases drew the most estimated players within the stated PC, PlayStation, and Xbox coverage—not which games were universally considered the best.
