The package contains the base game and The Frozen Wilds, the expansion that adds new lands, skills, weapons, and machines. PlayStation describes the remaster as featuring visual and technical improvements. Nixxes Principal Producer Linda Burgers said the goal was to overhaul the visuals to bring them closer to Horizon Forbidden West while retaining the first game’s original identity. The launch-day post includes her statement and confirms the physical PS5 edition.
What are the PS5 graphics modes?
The official PlayStation product page lists three PS5 graphics modes. The stated frame rates are targets, and 4K output requires a compatible display.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Can existing owners upgrade?
PlayStation announced a digital upgrade offer for owners of Horizon Zero Dawn or Horizon Zero Dawn Complete Edition on supported PlayStation and PC storefronts. Its quoted US upgrade price was $9.99 at announcement in 2024; confirm current eligibility and price with the store before purchasing. The announcement excluded PlayStation Plus redemptions from the offer.
For a PS4 disc owner, the disc-based upgrade route requires a PS5 with a disc drive: insert the PS4 disc to access the upgrade and keep it inserted to play. A PS5 Digital Edition cannot use that disc-based route. The upgrade terms and purchase options are described in PlayStation’s announcement and the product-page FAQ.
Quick Recap
Which version should you buy?
- Choose the PS5 physical edition if you want a disc copy and have a PS5 with a disc drive. PlayStation confirmed this edition at launch; check retailers for present stock and pricing.
- Choose the PS5 digital edition if you buy through PlayStation Store or want to play on a PS5 Digital Edition.
- Choose PC if you prefer the PC storefronts or want to use supported PC display, controller, and upscaling features. Check your hardware and display compatibility before relying on any particular feature.
- Check the owner upgrade offer first if you already own an eligible version. The announced price is historical, and a PS4 disc upgrade requires a disc-drive PS5 and the disc to remain inserted for play.
