To enable commands in Minecraft: Bedrock Edition, turn on Activate Cheats in the world’s settings. For a new world, enable it before creating the world; for an existing world, edit that world and switch it on. Enabling cheats disables achievements for that world, so consider the tradeoff before changing a long-running survival save.
Enable commands in a new Bedrock world
- Open Play, then choose Create New and Create New World.
- In the world settings, switch on Activate Cheats.
- Finish setting up the world and select Create.
Microsoft’s command-block tutorial documents this creation path. The exact layout may differ by platform or game version.
Turn on cheats in an existing world
- From the Play screen, find the world in the Worlds list.
- Open that world’s edit or settings screen.
- Switch on Activate Cheats, then return to the world and try the command again.
Microsoft’s Introduction to Commands says cheats can be enabled during world creation or by editing an existing world. The setting’s location and presentation can vary across platforms and versions.
Know the achievement tradeoff
Microsoft warns: “Be aware that enabling cheats will disable achievements for that world.” If achievements matter on an established save, weigh that consequence before switching on cheats.

Check your Operator Commands permission
Turning on cheats and granting a player permission to use commands are separate checks. If commands still do not work, check that player’s Operator Commands permission in the world’s player permissions. Microsoft says this permission is required to run commands in chat and access command blocks. It is on by default in newly created worlds, but may need to be changed in an existing world or for another player.
Get a command block
With cheats enabled and the necessary permission, open chat and enter:

A command block can run a command and can be activated by redstone. See Microsoft’s command-block tutorial for setup details.
Check the command’s own requirements
Requirements differ by command: some require cheats, and some require a particular permission level. Look up the command in Microsoft’s Bedrock command reference or enter /help in the game to check the command you want to use.

If the problem is multiplayer access
If someone cannot join or play in the world, check the host’s multiplayer world setting and the player’s account permissions. Those settings govern multiplayer access; they do not replace the separate Operator Commands permission needed to use commands. Microsoft’s guidance covers multiplayer troubleshooting and joining a friend’s world.
