You can use a PS3 DualShock 3 with a Nintendo Switch through a compatible third-party adapter, not by pairing it directly as a native Switch controller. Mayflash lists its MAGIC-NS adapter as compatible with both Switch and DualShock 3. In Switch Pro mode, turn on Pro Controller Wired Communication in the console settings, then follow the adapter’s current instructions for connecting the controller.
Can you pair a PS3 controller directly with a Switch?
Nintendo’s support pages do not document native DualShock 3 pairing. Nintendo describes Switch controller options such as Joy-Con and Nintendo Switch Pro Controller, and its pairing FAQ notes that pairing steps depend on the controller type. The FAQ’s statement that controllers from earlier Nintendo platforms are unsupported concerns Nintendo controllers; it does not specifically address PS3 hardware. For a DualShock 3, the documented route found here is a third-party adapter.
What you need
- A PS3 DualShock 3 controller. Check that the adapter’s current compatibility listing names the DualShock 3; a PS3 Navigation Controller is a different device.
- A compatible adapter. Mayflash lists the MAYFLASH MAGIC-NS adapter for Nintendo Switch and DualShock 3, with wired and Bluetooth controller connection options.
- The adapter’s current manual and firmware instructions for your adapter revision. Mayflash’s firmware and compatibility information can change, so check its MAGIC-NS support page as well as the product listing.
The compatibility claim is Mayflash’s, not Nintendo’s. Nintendo does not certify the third-party adapter.
How to connect the DualShock 3
- Check the adapter documentation. Confirm that your specific MAGIC-NS revision and DualShock 3 are supported, and read the current instructions for the connection method you plan to use. The exact pairing gesture can depend on the adapter instructions; do not assume a button-hold sequence.
- Connect and set up the adapter. Plug it into the Switch as directed by Mayflash and select its Switch Pro mode, if required by the current instructions. Follow Mayflash’s wired or Bluetooth pairing steps for the DualShock 3.
- Enable the Switch setting for Pro mode. On the console, open System Settings → Controllers and Sensors and turn on Pro Controller Wired Communication. Mayflash gives this instruction for Switch Pro mode.
- Check recognition in the game you want to play. Controller compatibility can vary by game, so test the controls in that title rather than assuming every game will accept the adapter.
If the Switch does not recognize the controller
- Confirm that the adapter is in the correct Switch mode and that Pro Controller Wired Communication is enabled when using Switch Pro mode.
- Recheck Mayflash’s current instructions for your adapter revision and whether you are connecting by cable or Bluetooth. Verify the cable and pairing steps for the chosen method.
- Check the current firmware and compatibility information on Mayflash’s support page. Make sure you are not relying on a listing for the PS3 Navigation Controller instead of the DualShock 3.
- If the controller registers but a game or feature does not behave as expected, check that game’s supported controller options. Adapter compatibility does not establish universal game or feature support.
What may not work
Mayflash’s listing supports the adapter-and-controller compatibility claim; it does not establish that every Switch game or every DualShock 3 feature will work. The reviewed documentation does not provide a universal guarantee for button behavior, rumble, motion controls, console wake functions, or other features. Nintendo also says controller compatibility varies by game. If a particular title or feature is essential, verify it for that game and adapter revision rather than treating basic connection as proof.
