How to clear the CurseForge CF temp folder on Windows
- Close CurseForge. This can help if the temporary files are in use.
- Open File Explorer, select the address bar, type
%temp%, and press Enter. - In the temporary-files location that opens, find and clear the
CFfolder. - Reopen CurseForge and retry the action that produced the error.
CurseForge Support’s Error Messages guidance, modified April 6, 2026, gives the instruction “Clear the %temp%CF folder” for an I/O error. It does not specify whether to remove the folder itself or only its contents, so do not treat either choice as a separately documented requirement.

Is this the right fix for your error?
I/O error while installing or handling an add-on
The official guidance says this error typically means the app cannot interact with local mod or add-on files. Along with clearing %temp%CF, check whether OneDrive or iCloud is locking or syncing the affected files. If a particular add-on appears to be the problem, manually delete and reinstall that add-on if appropriate. If the error remains, provide CurseForge Support with the exact error and logs.
Failed download, launcher-core/runtime, or some modloader installation errors
These problems may call for CurseForge’s built-in Repair Installation option rather than the temporary-folder cleanup. The official support guide lists repair for several installation and launcher errors; clearing %temp%CF is not presented as a universal substitute.

Modpack or profile launch trouble
For some listed launch errors, CurseForge recommends repair or switching to the Minecraft Launcher. A custom profile can also fail because mods conflict with one another or with the selected modloader. Follow the troubleshooting entry for the specific error rather than deleting unrelated folders.
What not to delete—and what changes by platform
Do not erase the whole CurseForge Minecraft folder as a routine cache-clearing step. The CF folder under Windows’ temporary-files location is distinct from the Minecraft modding folder, which holds the game’s modding environment. CurseForge’s Getting Started guide, modified December 4, 2025, lists these default modding-folder locations:

These are default locations, and the modding folder can be configured elsewhere. They are not the temporary CF path in the Windows I/O-error instruction. The reviewed official help does not provide an equivalent temporary-cache path for macOS or Linux, or a procedure that clears every kind of CurseForge cache.
If the problem continues
Use the official troubleshooting entry for the exact error and send CurseForge Support the logs and error details if its recommended steps do not resolve it. CurseForge’s installation guidance also cautions against unsupported modding-folder locations such as Desktop, OneDrive, the vanilla Minecraft folder, root folders, or paths containing special characters; it suggests using the default location or a new folder such as C:CurseForge or D:CurseForge. Those are folder-location troubleshooting tips, not cache-clearing steps.
