To convert a Minecraft Java Edition world for Bedrock Edition, use Chunker, a third-party, open-source world converter. Back up the Java world, select its folder or an archive in Chunker, choose a Bedrock output format, convert it, then open the resulting .mcworld file in Minecraft Bedrock. The conversion is not a perfect copy: Chunker’s documentation says it does not currently convert entities or player inventories.
Before converting: back up the Java world
Make a copy of the world and convert that copy. Keep the original unchanged so you can retry the conversion or return to it if something important does not come across as expected.

Convert the world with Chunker
- Open Chunker. Microsoft Learn describes it as available as a standalone application for Windows, Mac, and Linux, as well as a command-line application. Its overview links to the project’s releases for downloads: Chunker – Overview. Chunker is a third-party project, not a Mojang or Microsoft offering.
- Select the Java world. Choose the world folder or an archive. If selecting a folder, use the world’s root directory—the location containing
level.dat. - Choose a Bedrock output format. Pick a format compatible with the Bedrock installation that will open the converted world. Supported input and output formats can change with Chunker updates, so check the current list in the Chunker README rather than relying on an older version list.
- Convert and save. Start the conversion and review any errors Chunker reports. Save the converted output when processing finishes.
- Import it into Bedrock. Open the resulting
.mcworldfile. Microsoft Learn says Minecraft imports the world when you open this Bedrock-format file. - Check the result in game. Visit important builds and dimensions, and test containers and gameplay systems you care about. Pay particular attention to areas that depend on entities or player inventories.
What transfers—and what does not
Chunker documents support for level settings; world data including blocks, biomes, and tile entities; multiple dimensions; containers and items; and in-game maps. Its documentation also says it cannot currently convert entities or player inventories. Those gaps can affect entity-based builds or gameplay, and items a player was carrying may not be present after conversion. The documentation does not provide a general success rate or promise a lossless result, so inspect the converted copy rather than assuming it matches the Java save exactly.
Does conversion let Java and Bedrock players play together?
No. Conversion changes the world’s save format; it does not combine the two editions or make their multiplayer compatible. Minecraft’s Realms information describes separate Realms for Java and Bedrock, while Minecraft’s multiplayer requirements say Java players join Java games and Bedrock players join Bedrock games. A converted Bedrock world can be played with Bedrock players on supported Bedrock platforms, but Java players cannot join it as Java players.

Moving a Bedrock world to another device is a different task
If the world is already in Bedrock format and you want it on another device, Minecraft Help documents a Realms transfer: upload the world to a Realm and download it on the destination device. The process requires an active trial or paid Realms subscription. It is a Bedrock-world transfer procedure, not a Java-to-Bedrock converter: Use Realms to Transfer a Minecraft: Bedrock Edition World to Another Device.

Chunker also offers a command-line workflow, documented in its README. It may suit scripted or repeatable conversions; the graphical application provides a point-and-click route. Whichever you use, check the project’s current format support and convert a backup before replacing or sharing the destination world.
