Check the game’s packaging and the code printed on its cartridge label, then compare the game’s intended market with your 3DS system’s region. Nintendo confirms that the Nintendo 3DS family is region locked, so a game from a different region may not work on your system.
Check the packaging for a compatibility statement
Look on the back or side of the game’s packaging for wording that identifies compatible systems. Nintendo’s Americas example says: “Plays on Nintendo 3DS systems sold for the Americas only.” Nintendo says different compatibility wording indicates that the product was made for another region and will not work with an Americas system. Nintendo’s guide to identifying games from other regions is specific to the Americas.
Read the code on the cartridge label
Find the printed product code on the cartridge label. Nintendo gives LNA-CTR-AWZE-USA as an example of a game intended for the Americas. Its Americas support guidance says that if the code does not end in “USA,” the game is meant for an overseas market.
Do not treat that suffix rule as a worldwide decoding key: Nintendo’s instruction is for identifying games in the Americas, and the cited guidance does not provide a complete code table for every region. For a cartridge with another suffix, check its packaging and the relevant region’s Nintendo guidance rather than guessing its exact market.

Compare the game’s region with the console’s region
Nintendo says the Nintendo 3DS, 3DS XL, 2DS, New Nintendo 3DS, New Nintendo 3DS XL, and New Nintendo 2DS XL are region locked. Nintendo UK also says that a PAL-region 3DS plays software from that region. Use the packaging and cartridge code to identify the game’s intended market, then confirm the console’s region; matching them is the key compatibility check.
How the Americas grouping works
For the purposes of Nintendo’s Americas identification guidance, games and systems distributed throughout the Americas are treated as the same region. Nintendo gives the U.S., Mexico, Brazil, and Chile as examples of countries whose systems and games are compatible with one another. This does not make the USA suffix rule a universal guide to cartridges from other markets.

Buying a used 3DS game?
Ask the seller for a clear photo of the actual cartridge label and, if available, the packaging compatibility statement. Compare those details with your console’s region before buying. A listing title or stock photo alone may not show the code on the specific copy being sold.
