To display FPS (frames per second) while playing, first check the game’s video, display, HUD, or interface settings for a built-in counter. If you play on PC, you can also use an overlay from your launcher or graphics software: Steam’s Performance Monitor, Xbox Game Bar on Windows 11, NVIDIA App, or AMD Software: Adrenalin Edition. The right option depends on your game, operating system, and hardware.
Start with the game’s own FPS setting
Look in the game’s video, display, HUD, or interface settings for an FPS or frame-rate display option. Menu names and availability vary by game, so there is no universal in-game path. If you do not find a counter, try an overlay that fits the platform and software you already use.
Display FPS with Steam
- Open Steam > Settings > In Game.
- Configure the Performance Monitor and choose the detail level you want.
- Launch a game with the Steam overlay available. The monitor appears in a screen corner while you play.
Steam’s monitor can show FPS and, depending on the detail level, CPU, GPU, and system RAM information. You can adjust its position, detail, contrast or saturation, and background opacity. See Steam’s Performance Monitor instructions for the current options.
Know which frame-rate figure you are seeing
When frame generation is in use, Steam may show both the game’s actual frame rate and a display frame rate that includes generated frames. Those figures describe different things, so check which one is shown before comparing it with another counter. Steam explains the distinction.

Use Xbox Game Bar in Windows 11
Press Win+G to open Xbox Game Bar, then find the FPS reading in the Performance section. This is the Windows 11 route documented by Intel Support. The cited instructions establish this path but do not cover troubleshooting when the FPS metric is missing.
Use the NVIDIA App overlay
- In NVIDIA App, open Settings > Features and enable In-Game Overlay.
- While in a game, press Alt+R to toggle the statistics overlay. NVIDIA lists Alt+Shift+R as the shortcut to cycle metrics.
- For layout options, press Alt+Z, then open Statistics > Configure heads up display.
NVIDIA’s support article identifies the feature for desktop and laptop GeForce RTX systems and GeForce GTX 600-series-and-newer systems. Interface names and shortcuts can change between software versions; consult NVIDIA’s overlay instructions if the path differs in your installation.

- QHD Resolution (2560 x 1440) has 1.7 times the pixel density of Full HD for incredibly detailed pinsharp images
- HDR10 provides brighter highlights and nuanced shadow for added depth - making every scene feel more vivid and realistic
- The 180Hz refresh rate minimizes lag for gameplay with ultra-smooth action. Plus, the 1ms response time helps capture your moves in real-time, allowing you to react fast for gaming precision
- AMD FreeSync reduces choppiness, screen lag and image tearing, ensuring that your fast-paced, complex in-game action is stable with minimal stutter
- Ergonomic stand allows for tilt, pivot and height adjustments to maximize gaming comfort
Use AMD Software: Adrenalin Edition
- Open AMD Software and search for Metrics.
- Select Performance Metrics, choose the frame-rate metric, and enable its overlay.
- Press Ctrl+Shift+O to toggle the Performance Overlay; AMD lists this as the default shortcut.
AMD documents this feature for compatible AMD Radeon Series Graphics using the full installation of Adrenalin Edition. Its steps are based on Adrenalin 23.9.1 and an RX 7900 XT / Ryzen 7 5950 example, and AMD notes that available options may vary by system. Check AMD’s Performance Metrics instructions for its documented procedure.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Which FPS counter should you choose?
- For a Steam game: try Steam’s Performance Monitor if the Steam overlay is available.
- For Windows 11: Xbox Game Bar provides the documented Win+G route.
- For a GeForce system: use the NVIDIA App overlay if your graphics hardware meets NVIDIA’s stated requirements.
- For a Radeon system: use AMD’s overlay with compatible graphics and the full Adrenalin installation.
- For any game with a built-in counter: its own setting is the most direct option to check first.
These options are software features; the cited instructions do not establish that a physical product is needed to display FPS. They also do not compare the counters’ measurement accuracy, performance overhead, or compatibility across every game, so there is no evidence-based universal winner.
