To start Share Play, open a party with your friend and launch it from the party interface. On PS5, use the party voice-chat card in Control Center; on PS4, choose Share Play from the party screen. Sony requires PlayStation Plus to start a session, and the friend joins as a visitor.
Start Share Play on PS5
- Press the PS button to open Control Center.
- Select the party voice-chat card.
- Choose Start Share Play.
- Invite a friend and select the play mode.
- Wait for the friend to join; the session begins when they become the visitor.
To change the mode or end the session, open the party voice-chat card and select Share Play Options. A friend joining from PS4 can use the Share Your Screen with Visitor mode when invited by a PS5 host. Sony’s PS5 Share Play instructions.
Start Share Play on PS4
- Select Party from the function screen and create or join a party with your friend.
- Select Share Play on the party screen.
- Select the visitor.
- Choose a play mode, then wait for your friend to join.
To switch modes during a session, open the party and select Share Play > Change Play Mode. Sony’s PS4 Share Play instructions.
Choose what your friend can do
Share Play streams the host’s play session to an online friend. The friend does not need to own the game, but the game and account must allow Share Play. The available interaction depends on the console and mode.

Sony’s PlayStation Plus Share Play guidance explains that the session is streamed remotely and the friend need not own the game.
Requirements and limits to know before inviting someone
- PlayStation Plus: Sony says a Plus membership is required to start Share Play. Some modes also require Plus for both players, as shown above.
- Internet connection: Sony recommends at least 2 Mbps upload and 2 Mbps download for each participant for the best experience. This is guidance, not a guarantee of smooth play. Check the console at Settings > Network > Test Internet Connection.
- One visitor: Only one visitor can join a session at a time.
- One-hour session: Share Play ends automatically one hour after the visitor joins.
- Game and account restrictions: Some games or scenes are unavailable. A visitor may be blocked if they are below the game’s age rating, parental controls restrict access, or the game is unavailable in their country or region.
- Session limitations: Only the host can earn trophies. Visitors cannot save screenshots or video clips during the session, and Remote Play and Broadcast are unavailable while Share Play is active.
Allow guest login when needed
If a participant is using a guest account and cannot join or play together, check the guest-login restriction on the host’s console:

- PS5: Settings > Family and Parental Controls > PS5 Console Restrictions > User Creation and Guest Login.
- PS4: For host-and-visitor play together, check Settings > Parental Controls/Family Management > PS4 System Restrictions > New User Creation and Guest Login.
Share Play is different from Console Sharing
Console Sharing and Offline Play is a separate PS5 setting for sharing purchased games and media, and some PlayStation Plus benefits, with people who use that console. It does not start a remote Share Play session; start Share Play through a party instead. See Sony’s Share Play support page.
