Spoilers: This ranking names areas and optional challenges that can reveal exploration milestones. White Palace ranks first for its trap-focused platforming; Deepnest, Kingdom’s Edge, and Queen’s Gardens challenge players in different ways. The order is an editorial judgment, not an official or measured community ranking.
How this Hollow Knight area ranking works
“Hardest” depends on what gives a player trouble. This ranking compares exploring and moving through areas—not a leaderboard of boss fights—and weighs four factors: traversal precision, enemy pressure, route uncertainty, and the burden of recovering after a failure. The order is subjective, and players who find combat harder than platforming may rank the areas differently.

Areas have distinct environments and creatures, as the official Hollow Knight site puts it. Those differences shape the challenges below, but the game does not provide an official difficulty scale.
The 10 hardest areas in Hollow Knight
-
White Palace
White Palace takes the top spot for precision platforming and hazards. Team Cherry described it as “a huge trap-filled palace” and said the area is optional and explorable late in the Knight’s journey. Access requires the Awoken Dream Nail and Monarch Wings. Its late-game placement means players arrive with more movement options, but the palace still asks for careful control and repeated attempts.

- Play in creative mode with unlimited resources or mine deep into the world in survival mode, crafting weapons and armor to fend off the dangerous mobs
- Play on the go in handheld or tabletop modes
- Includes Super Mario Mash-Up, Natural Texture Pack, Biome Settlers Skin Pack, Battle & Beasts Skin Pack, Campfire Tales Skin Pack; Compatible with Nintendo Switch only
The hidden Path of Pain pushes that platforming challenge further. It is a separate, secret challenge within White Palace—not a standalone region—and is reached through a breakable wall. Completing it triggers a cutscene and grants a Seal of Binding journal entry; it cannot be entered again after completion. Those rewards and one-way access make it a particularly high-stakes detour for completion-minded players. White Palace and Path of Pain reference.
-
Deepnest
Deepnest ranks near the top because its dark, cramped tunnels and chasms make navigation less predictable. Its confined passages can make enemy encounters feel more intrusive: there is less room to orient yourself and choose a route. It is difficult less for one uniform platforming test than for the combined pressure of uncertain navigation and hostile-feeling surroundings. Hallownest area descriptions.
-
Kingdom’s Edge
Kingdom’s Edge occupies Hallownest’s eastern side, where high chasms and wide caverns sit beneath falling white ash. The open scale can make traversal and route choice demanding, especially when crossing exposed gaps. Connections from King’s Station and tram access via Deepnest or Ancient Basin give it several approaches, but reaching it is not the same as having a simple route through it. Kingdom’s Edge reference; Hallownest area descriptions.

-
Queen’s Gardens
Queen’s Gardens was once an orderly retreat and is now overgrown. That transformation gives the area a less orderly feel than its former purpose suggests, and the combination of traversal and enemy pressure can make progress uneven. It ranks below the first three because this list puts the densest navigation and precision burdens ahead of difficulty driven mainly by combat interruptions. Hallownest area descriptions.

Ancient Basin
Ancient Basin lies at Hallownest’s deepest point and contains the White Palace’s former location. Its depth makes it feel remote in the broader world, so a failed attempt can feel costly when returning from elsewhere. It ranks here for the recovery burden and the care needed while navigating a deep, isolated region—not because the area is an uninterrupted platforming gauntlet. Hallownest area descriptions.
-
Crystal Peak
Crystal Peak makes movement hazards central to exploration. Its place in this ranking reflects the precision demanded by traversing a hazardous environment, with navigation adding to the work of moving through it. It sits below the more severe combinations of route uncertainty, enemy pressure, and recovery burden near the top of the list.

-
Fog Canyon
Fog Canyon is challenging when the route itself is not obvious and movement must be planned around hazards. It ranks higher for navigation and cautious traversal than for sustained combat pressure. Players who are comfortable exploring uncertain paths may find it less demanding than its position suggests.
-
Royal Waterways
Royal Waterways earns its place for close-quarters navigation and the friction of moving through an enclosed region. Tight spaces can make encounters and route-finding feel more demanding than a broader, more open area. Its difficulty profile is less about sustained precision platforming than White Palace or the exposed terrain of Kingdom’s Edge.

Greenpath
Greenpath can test players early, when their movement options and familiarity with Hallownest are still developing. Its obstacles and enemies may be a sharper challenge on a first visit than they are later in the game. It ranks lower because the challenge is more affected by when a player encounters it than by the extreme precision or recovery demands of the top entries.

SaleSuper Mario Galaxy™ + Super Mario Galaxy™ 2- Journey through space in two Super Mario adventures, now improved for the Nintendo Switch system!

-
Howling Cliffs
Howling Cliffs rounds out the list as a region where exploration and route-finding can take attention, but it does not combine the same level of platforming precision, enemy pressure, and costly recovery as the areas above. Its placement is especially likely to vary with a player’s priorities: someone who finds navigation hardest may rank it higher.
Why players may rank the areas differently
- Platforming is the hardest part for you: White Palace is the clearest candidate for number one, with its secret Path of Pain as an even more demanding optional challenge.
- Combat and cramped navigation wear you down: Deepnest may feel harder than the wider spaces of Kingdom’s Edge.
- Route-finding is your weak point: areas with uncertain paths can climb your personal ranking even if their platforming is less exacting.
- Backtracking feels costly: remote areas may seem harder because failure means more recovery, even without the tightest platforming.
An interactive Hallownest map and downloadable area maps can help clarify where areas connect. They are navigation aids, not evidence that one area is objectively harder than another.
