First identify what “not loading” means: does the Xbox One fail to reach Home, does Home appear but games or apps will not open, or is the TV showing no picture? The documented update steps below apply when you can use Settings. If the console cannot start normally, use the Startup Troubleshooter only with current, model-specific guidance from Xbox Support; the recovery steps and their effects are not established here.
1. If Home opens, check for a console update
On the Xbox One, press the Xbox button and open Profile & system > Settings > System > Updates & downloads > Update console. Microsoft’s Xbox One system update instructions say that a grayed-out “No console update available” message means the console is already up to date.

If Settings is usable but a particular game or app still will not open, this update check is a reasonable first step. The available guidance does not establish a specific fix for individual games, apps, or display failures, so do not assume the console update will resolve every kind of loading problem.
2. Set up automatic updates if the dashboard works
Microsoft says an Xbox One can receive updates while turned off when its Power mode is set to Instant-on and Keep my console up to date is enabled under System > Updates & downloads. These settings help a working console stay current; they do not recover one that cannot boot.

3. If the Startup Troubleshooter appears, verify the recovery steps first
A Microsoft Community response describes a troubleshooter option to reset the console while keeping games and apps, and points readers to Xbox Support’s offline-update instructions. That community reply is not the official recovery procedure. Before selecting a reset or following an offline update, check Xbox Support for current instructions for your exact Xbox One model, and confirm what the chosen option does to installed games, settings, accounts, and saved data.
The same community response, updated April 23, 2025, says its offline-update route requires a Windows PC with internet access and an NTFS-formatted USB flash drive with at least 6 GB. These requirements have not been confirmed against the official procedure here. Check Xbox Support before preparing a drive; an offline update is a conditional recovery route, not a general fix or a remedy for a hardware fault.
