Holten is a village in the municipality of Rijssen-Holten, in Overijssel, Netherlands. Set at the foot of the Holterberg in the Salland region, it is best suited to visitors looking for marked walks, cycling and mountain biking, with a village-center stop and local heritage to round out a visit.

Where is Holten?

Holten is part of the municipality of Rijssen-Holten; it is not a municipality itself. The municipality describes the Holterberg as the southern part of National Park De Sallandse Heuvelrug, an area of more than 35 square kilometres. Gemeente Rijssen-Holten provides local visitor information. For scale, the government registry lists the whole municipality—not Holten village alone—as 94.38 km² with 39,274 residents, in data updated 3 October 2026. Overheid.nl

What can you do in Holten?

Walk the Holterberg and nearby routes

Walking is one of Holten’s clearest draws. The regional tourism listing includes the 7.7 km Ommetje Holterberg and the 7.2 km Koeweide route. The municipality also identifies the Pieterpad, Reggepad, Marskramerpad and Sallandse Zandloper as long-distance paths passing through the municipality. These are listed distances, not a rating of difficulty or trail accessibility; check route-operator information and signs for surfaces, closures and conditions.

Cycle or mountain bike

For mountain biking, Visit Twente lists the Holterberg MTB route at 29.1 km. Families looking for a shorter outing can consider its 22 km children’s cycling route in Holten. Route details can change, so check current operator information before setting out. Visit Twente’s Holten listing gathers these routes and other local visitor options.

The municipality describes the Wereldtijdpad as a 50 km route divided into nine walks of 4 to 10 km, marked with more than 2,000 year markers. Its sections offer a way to choose a shorter walk while following a route organized around historical markers. Confirm the current route information before visiting.

What else is worth seeing?

Smidsbelt village center

Smidsbelt is identified by Visit Twente as the heart of Holten. Lunchrooms, restaurants, terraces, markets and events make it a practical place to pause before or after time outdoors. It also serves as a start or finish point for walking and cycling events; check local listings for dates and details.

Holten Canadian War Cemetery

The municipality recommends the Holten Canadian War Cemetery as a heritage stop. It offers a quieter, reflective counterpoint to a day on the trails. Check current visitor information and respect any posted guidance on site.

Oudheidkamer Hoolt’n

This local-history museum presents exhibitions about Holten. Its published seasonal hours are Tuesday through Saturday, 13:30–16:00, from April to October, and Friday and Saturday, 13:30–16:00, from November to March. Admission is by voluntary contribution. Hours can change, so confirm directly with Oudheidkamer Hoolt’n before travelling.
