Seth is the Shrine Guardian at Shellwood Shrine in Grand Gate. To beat him, learn the cymbal throws and crash shockwave, then punish the short openings after his committed attacks; in phase two, his attacks come much faster. Defeating him opens the route to Nyleth’s shrine.
Where to find Seth
Seth guards Shellwood Shrine in Grand Gate, on the route toward Nyleth’s shrine. For route orientation, PC Gamer places the entrance to the Heart of the Woods route halfway down the left side of the Grand Gate lift shaft. Break in, drop through, and open the Underworks bench shortcut before continuing toward the bosses; this gives you a useful route back without making that approach the only way to reach Seth. PC Gamer identifies Seth and Nyleth as the two bosses required to obtain the Heart of the Woods (PC Gamer’s Heart of the Woods guide).
Seth begins passively. He engages if Hornet talks to him, accepts his challenge, or tries to walk past. The encounter does not lock Hornet into the arena: leave the area to reset the fight. The Hollow Knight Wiki reproduces his Hunter’s Journal description as: “Eternal defender of Shellwood Shrine. His pin and cymbal show many marks of their use.” (Hollow Knight Wiki: Seth)
How to read Seth’s attacks
Seth fights with a gilded pin and a cymbal that doubles as a shield and projectile. He can block attacks from the side or above, reposition with short dashes, and teleport directly into attacks—often appearing behind Hornet. That means distance is not automatically safe, and attacking from above or behind is not a reliable way to avoid his guard. The move names below are descriptive labels used by the reference, not confirmed official names.

- Three-slash pin combo: A close-range sequence. Avoid committing to an attack until the final slash has passed.
- Pin whirlwind: A spinning pin attack that makes close contact dangerous while it is active.
- Horizontal or aerial cymbal throw: Seth sends the cymbal across the arena or through the air. Watch the projectile’s path and its return or landing before moving in.
- Cymbal crash: Seth brings the cymbal down and sends out a circular shockwave. The shockwave is the key hazard; do not treat the impact itself as the whole attack.
- Follow-through lunge: Some attacks are followed by a lunge, so wait for the follow-through to finish before taking an opening.
- Teleport and dash repositioning: Seth can quickly change sides or close distance, including when Hornet is far away. Keep track of his position rather than assuming he will stay where an attack began.
How to beat Seth in phase one
Focus on recognizing when an attack is committed, then take a brief opening after its full sequence. In particular, watch for the cymbal’s return or landing after a throw, and make sure the crash shockwave has passed before approaching. Avoid staying directly behind Seth or relying on long-range spacing alone: he can block from multiple angles and teleport into attacks.
The practical approach follows the documented patterns rather than a tested build: preserve room to read the projectile, avoid the shockwave, and do not swing through a follow-through. A short, controlled punish is safer than trying to extend an opening while Seth can reposition. No definitive best loadout or independently tested strategy is established by the cited material.

What changes in phase two
At 474 HP, Seth staggers and enters phase two. He attacks with much shorter gaps between moves and teleports more often. At 889 HP or lower, his attacks speed up, so the acceleration begins before the phase-two threshold.
His major new sequence is a crash combo: three cymbal crashes delivered through teleports, followed by a follow-through. He can also chain an aerial cymbal toss into a crash or into the crash combo. Wait out the entire sequence—including the final follow-through—before trying to punish. The smaller gaps make it more important to prioritize survival and positioning over squeezing in an extra hit.

What defeating Seth unlocks
Beating Seth opens the path to Nyleth’s shrine. Seth and Nyleth are the two required bosses on the Heart of the Woods route, according to PC Gamer’s route guide.
Seth also appears later around Pharloom. His appearances and the Guardian’s Memento route are separate from the shrine reward: PC Gamer’s guide describes meeting him at later locations and beating his Festival of the Flea high scores, with quest conditions affecting the route. It lists Greymoor, Shellwood, Grand Gate, and Fleatopia among his locations (PC Gamer’s Guardian’s Memento guide).
