You can allow play while still setting separate limits for age ratings, chat, purchases, and playtime.
1. Set up a child account on the PS5
Use a separate PlayStation account for your child and add it to the family managed by an adult account. Sony’s PS5 Quick Start Guide describes family controls for limiting games, playtime, and chat. To add or switch users on the console:
- Press the PS button and select the profile picture.
- Choose Switch User, then Add User, and follow the prompts to create or add the child’s account.
- Open Settings > Family and Parental Controls to review the child’s settings.
If the child already has a PlayStation account, check that it is included in the family and that you are adjusting the correct child profile. Existing family and parental-control settings may carry over from PS4.
2. Check the PS5 game-rating restriction
PS5 parental controls can restrict which games a child can play. Review the child’s permitted game rating in Settings > Family and Parental Controls. Rating labels and categories depend on your region, so use the ratings shown for your location rather than assuming a label from another country applies.

If Fortnite is blocked by the console’s age restriction, review the rating setting for the child’s account. Choose a limit that fits your family’s decision; there is no single setting appropriate for every age or region.
3. Set Fortnite’s Epic parental controls on the right account
Epic’s controls apply to Epic features in Fortnite across platforms, but they only affect the account you edit. On the child’s Epic account, sign in to the Epic Account Portal, open Parental Controls, set a six-digit PIN, and choose the permissions you want. Epic also allows controls to be changed from Fortnite.

For a console player, verify that the portal account is the one connected to the child’s Fortnite game. Compare the Account ID in the portal with the Account ID displayed in Fortnite; changing controls on a different Epic account will not change the child’s settings.
4. Choose which Fortnite experiences are allowed
Fortnite experiences have their own age ratings. In Epic’s parental controls, set the highest rating the child may access. A PIN is needed to unlock an experience above that threshold. Epic’s example is that a threshold of Everyone 10+ requires a PIN to access Teen-rated experiences. Ratings and rating systems vary by geography, so check the labels displayed for your region.

5. Decide who can communicate with your child
Epic offers chat permissions such as Everybody, Friends, team members, and connections, Friends Only, and Nobody, subject to age limits. Epic’s current guidance states that the maximum permission is Friends Only for players under 10, and Friends, team members, and connections for players under 13. The options available to your child may therefore be narrower than the full list.
Voice chat and text chat are separate considerations. Epic says enabling voice chat also enables voice reporting; for players under 18, voice reporting is always on. Epic also cautions that its in-game voice setting may not disable chat provided by the console. Review the child’s PS5 communication controls as well as Epic’s settings.

6. Set spending and playtime limits if needed
Epic parental controls include purchase permissions and time limits for Fortnite and UEFN. Epic’s time limit follows the same Epic account across devices. A PS5 playtime restriction is separate and can further limit time on that console. If you use both, the child must stay within each applicable limit.

Usually, basic play is still possible. Epic says an account is “cabined” when the player is under 13 or below the applicable age of digital consent in their country, whichever threshold is higher. While consent is pending, the child can still play Fortnite and use previously earned or purchased content, but some features—including voice or free-text chat and real-money purchases—may be disabled. Completing parental consent and account setup allows a parent to configure additional permissions; consent is not necessarily required just to start playing.
