The answer to “Should I get Homeworld 3?” depends on which side of that balance matters more to you.
What reviewers think of Homeworld 3
Homeworld 3 is a PC real-time strategy game developed by Blackbird Interactive and published by Gearbox Publishing. It was released on May 13, 2024. On Metacritic’s release-era PC critic summary, it received a 75 Metascore from 41 reviews, categorized as generally favorable. The displayed distribution was 25 positive reviews (61%), 16 mixed (39%), and no negative reviews. Metacritic’s platform listing showed 45 reviews, so the 75 score and distribution reflect the 41-review summary, not every review listed on the page. Metacritic’s Homeworld 3 page and its PC critic reviews provide the source context.

That aggregate does not mean every reviewer agreed. GamingTrend’s critic review, published May 10, 2024, called it “everything I hoped it could be,” while other reviews were more qualified. Taken together, the reviews suggest a game whose combat and atmosphere land more consistently than its story and moment-to-moment command experience.
What critics praise
Atmosphere and presentation
Reviewers frequently singled out the game’s space environments and visual presentation as striking and atmospheric. Noisy Pixel’s May 10, 2024 review described being captivated by “its depiction of the endless, beautiful void of space,” even while criticizing the story’s lightness. That makes presentation one of the clearest strengths in the critical response, rather than a guarantee that every part of the campaign works equally well. Metacritic’s PC critic review excerpts collect these assessments.

#1 Best Overall
- Combat: Strategic freedom is yours. Hulking space derelicts called megaliths bring 3D terrain into the classic Homeworld battlespace. Use the crumbling remains of an ancient civilization to funnel foes into a brilliant ambush or hide your fleet from powerful enemies.
- Visuals: Homeworld’s timeless art style evolves with modern technology, offering an incredible sense of scale, destruction, and wonder. Strike craft fly in formation between hulking Battlecruisers against a backdrop of stars and nebulae. Iconic ships cast silhouettes over the remains of ancient civilizations. Explosions ripple and erupt across hulls as one fleet stakes its victory over another.
- Story: Homeworld’s game-of-the-year winning story continues. Since the end of Homeworld 2, the galaxy enjoyed an age of abundance thanks to the Hyperspace Gate Network. Cycles of plenty and war have come and gone. Now the gates themselves are catastrophically failing and Karan, who has passed into myth and religious idolatry, is the key to the mystery threatening a galaxy’s future.
- War Games: War Games, the all-new three player co-op mode extends your game beyond the campaign. Fusing Homeworld’s RTS gameplay with roguelike inspiration, commanders take on a randomized series of fleet combat challenges. Claim powerful Artifacts that augment your ships with more power, speed, and, of course, weapons. Based on your results, you’ll unlock new fleets to shake up your strategy.
- PVP Battles: Your ultimate test of tactical skill comes in battle against human opponents. Sharpen your instincts in AI skirmish matches, before squaring off with human opponents in 1v1, free-for-all, or team battles.
Three-dimensional fleet tactics
Positive reviews highlighted fleet tactics, unit variety, line of sight, and using the battlefield to gain an advantage. The game’s fully 3D setting gives those tactical decisions room to matter, and critics who responded well to the combat found a satisfying reason to command ships in space. These are reviewer judgments, not a promise that every encounter will feel deep or intuitive.
A return that some series fans welcomed
Some critics called Homeworld 3 a worthy successor and welcomed the series’ return. That reaction was not universal: the mixed reviews show that nostalgia and a familiar setting were not enough for everyone. If continuity with earlier games is your main reason to play, weigh the narrative criticism alongside the positive response to the combat and atmosphere.
What reviewers criticize
A less compelling story
Several reviews described the narrative as simplistic or weaker than the storytelling associated with earlier Homeworld games. This is a recurring criticism rather than a unanimous verdict, but it matters most if you want a strong story continuation as the center of the experience. Noisy Pixel’s review captures the split: it praised the game’s view of space while calling the story lightweight.

Controls, commands, and pathing
Some critics reported frustration with the control scheme, unit pathing, and issuing commands. Digital Trends wrote that missions in both the campaign and multiplayer were “plagued by innumerable issues related to unit pathing, controls, and commands.” That is a reviewer’s assessment, not independent testing or proof that every player will encounter the same problems. Still, it is a significant caveat for a strategy game where precise fleet orders are central to play. Metacritic’s review excerpts include the cited criticism.

Questions about replay value
Some reviews questioned whether the available modes would sustain long-term interest or capture what they considered the series’ strongest qualities. The developer lists War Games, a co-op roguelite mode, as well as large-scale PvP; it also provides a modding guide. Those are stated features, not evidence that each mode’s balance, longevity, or quality has been independently established. See the official Homeworld 3 page for the developer’s feature description.

User ratings look more negative than the critic aggregate, but the sources measure different groups in different ways. Metacritic’s 2024-era page capture showed a 3.0 user score from 84 ratings, labeled “Generally Unfavorable”; its displayed breakdown was 18% positive, 8% mixed, and 74% negative. This is a relatively small, self-selected pool, not a representative survey of players.

A Steam search result surfaced a “Mixed” classification for English-language reviews, with 41% positive out of 3,160 reviews. That figure was captured weeks before access and is volatile, so it should not be treated as the current Steam rating. Metacritic critic reviews, Metacritic user ratings, and Steam’s language-filtered recommendation reviews are not directly comparable. Should you get Homeworld 3?
Consider it if the main draw is commanding fleets through atmospheric 3D battlefields and making tactical use of unit roles and line of sight. Be more cautious if you chiefly want a powerful narrative sequel or expect every unit command and movement order to feel friction-free. The reviews point to strengths and reservations on both sides, rather than a universal verdict.
