You can change an Xbox gamertag for free if you have not used the free change available to your account. Use the Xbox One settings route or Microsoft’s official web page, and check the confirmation screen for the new tag and any charge before submitting.
Change your gamertag on Xbox One
- Press the Xbox button on your controller.
- Go to System > Settings > Personalization > My profile > Customize profile.
- Select your current gamertag, then select it again.
- Enter a new gamertag or choose one of the suggestions.
- Review the resulting tag and any displayed cost. Confirm only if both are correct.

Change your gamertag on the web
- Open social.xbox.com/changegamertag.
- Sign in with the Microsoft account linked to the Xbox profile you want to update.
- Enter a gamertag or choose an available suggestion.
- Review the displayed tag and any charge, then confirm only if you want to proceed.
Microsoft’s Game Development Kit documentation identifies this page for retail accounts and says accounts get one free change to set a modern gamertag. The exact web interface can change, so use the current prompts and confirmation screen. Microsoft Learn: modern gamertag best practices
When is a gamertag change free?
Microsoft Support says that if the gamertag was created for you when you first signed in, “you can change it once for free.” Microsoft’s technical documentation also states, “All accounts get one free change to set a modern gamertag.” These statements describe a limited allowance, not unlimited free changes. If you are unsure whether your account has used it, rely on the offer or charge shown in the signed-in change flow.

Later changes may have a charge, but the amount depends on the current account and region. Xbox Wire stated on November 15, 2019, that subsequent changes cost $9.99 in the U.S. at that time. Why might a duplicate gamertag have a suffix?
Under Microsoft’s modern gamertag system, people can use the same base name in relevant cases; a suffix distinguishes a tag when needed. The displayed modern gamertag may therefore include a suffix. Review the complete tag shown in the flow, not just the name you typed. The available characters and resulting format are governed by the current account interface.

Xbox Wire announced additional gamertag changes for Xbox Insiders in the Alpha Skip-Ahead ring on June 24, 2026, including preview behavior involving unique tags up to 15 characters and suffixes for non-unique tags or tags using non-Latin characters.
