If you mean a game-page age prompt, UK age verification, or controls for a child, those use different settings.
Which Steam age setting do you mean?
- What mature content appears in the Store: Change the content categories in Store Preferences.
- A warning on one game’s page: This is a product age-gate, which is separate from your account’s content preferences.
- Access to additional mature-content options in the UK: Steam’s age-assurance process applies to UK accounts.
- A child’s access to games or Steam features: Use Steam Families parental controls.
Changing Store Preferences does not change a game’s official age rating or establish that a birthday entered on an age prompt has been edited.
How do I turn mature content on or off?
- Sign in to the Steam account you want to change.
- Open Store Preferences.
- Review the mature-content categories and enable or disable the ones you want filtered. Steam offers preferences for content types such as violence or nudity; a single setting may not control every category.
- Save your changes if the page displays a save control.
To stop mature games from appearing, review and filter the relevant categories on this page. These preferences affect what the Store shows you; they do not alter the game’s rating.
Why is Steam asking me to verify my age?
In the UK, Steam may require age assurance before it makes additional mature-content preferences available. Valve’s UK instructions say to add a valid credit card to the account and complete the authorization requested by the card issuer. Debit cards do not qualify for this process.

- Sign in to Steam and open Account Details.
- Select Add a Payment method to this account.
- Enter valid credit card details and complete the issuer’s authorization challenge.
- Return to Store Preferences and select the additional mature-content types you want to allow.
Steam Support says, “Your UK Steam user account is considered age verified for as long as a valid credit card is stored on the account.” This credit-card process is specific to the UK; it should not be treated as a general Steam verification method for other regions. How do I manage Steam content for my child?
Use Steam Families parental controls rather than changing the adult account’s Store Preferences. Steam Families replaced the older Family View system.

- Open Account Settings > Family Management.
- Select Manage, then expand the child’s entry.
- Enable parental controls and configure game access, Steam feature access, and playtime limits.

A game-page age-gate is separate from Store Preferences. Steamworks documentation says a warning may be triggered by content preferences or by the regional rating-board age-gate configured for a product. The official material does not establish that a date entered at a prompt can be edited later, so changing Store Preferences should not be expected to change a previously entered birthday.
