Keep the Warden from noticing you or getting angry for 60 seconds. Minecraft’s Java Snapshot 22w12a documents that after this uninterrupted period, the Warden digs underground and despawns. Move away quietly and avoid provoking it while the timer runs.
How to make a Warden despawn
- Get away without provoking it. Avoid contact and actions that create vibrations. Wardens can sense vibrations and smell nearby targets, and collision can also draw their attention.
- Stay unnoticed and keep it calm for 60 seconds. If the Warden notices you or gets angry during that period, the documented condition has not been met; keep your distance and wait for an uninterrupted 60 seconds.
- Let it finish its retreat. Under the documented Java behavior, it digs back underground and despawns.
This 60-second mechanic is stated in the official Minecraft Java Snapshot 22w12a notes, published March 24, 2022. It describes that snapshot’s behavior; it is not a guarantee for every later release, mod, server plugin, or custom configuration.
Does a Warden despawn in water?
Liquid changes how the disappearance looks in the documented Bedrock behavior, not the waiting condition. The official Bedrock 1.19.10 update notes say that a Warden in liquid when it attempts to despawn vanishes without the digging animation or sound. They do not describe water as an instant-despawn method.
Can you distract a Warden while it despawns?
Projectile vibrations can distract it, but they are not a despawn trigger and can make the wait harder. Minecraft’s Java Snapshot 22w12a notes say that two projectile vibrations within five seconds make the Warden angrier at the shooter. A projectile vibration more than five seconds after the previous one does not increase its anger at that shooter. For the natural despawn condition, the safer approach is to stop provoking it and let it remain unaware and calm for 60 seconds.

Will wool or a sculk shrieker despawn an active Warden?
No cited mechanic supports using wool or breaking a shrieker to remove a Warden that is already present. The official Minecraft sculk shrieker guide explains prevention: wool can block the alarm signal between a sculk sensor and shrieker, and a player-placed shrieker will not summon a Warden. Those details help prevent a new summon; they do not replace the 60-second wait for an active Warden.
